In the 2009 class, Fremd middle infielder Todd Dunham was the event’s top overall athlete; Dunham ran an event-best 6.5 60 and displayed a smooth swing and tremendous hands in the field. Click here to watch Dunham’s showcase video.
On the mound, De La Salle RHP Gerardo Esquivel and Crystal Lake South RHP Ian Gardeck opened a lot of eyes with their performances. Esquival, with a smooth, effortless arm action and clean mechanics, had command of three pitches along with an 86-87 mph fastball. Click here to watch Esquival in action. Gardeck was equally as impressive with his 88-90 mph fastball. Daniel Okapal, a 6-foot-4 RHP from East Aurora HS, was the event’s biggest surprise with his 85-89 mph fastball.
LaSalle-Peru SS-RHP Karch Kowalczyk showed impressive power to all fields and was ranked the top hitter at event. Niles North catcher Josh Levy had the strongest arm from behind the dish, recording consistent sub-two pop times (1.92 being his best). Illinois Valley Central SS-3B Jordan Parr showcased a strong arm from the infield and an impressive bat at the plate.
As for the Class of 2010, Lake Park RHP-SS Peter Spear established himself as an elite prospect by doing it all. On the mound, Spear impressed the 65-plus college and pro scouts in attendance with a quick and easy 85-87 mph fastball; he ran a 6.87 60 and showed top-level hands in the field. St. Ignatius SS-RHP Jack Fischer was the class’s top defensive middle infielder and hitter, along with an impressive performance on the mound. Oak Forest C-OF Tim Barry, the only Class of 2011 player at the event, showcased his tremendous power at the plate and plus arm strength behind the dish. Lisle’s Jon Surber, a 6-foot-3 RHP-3B, showed why he’s one of the best pitching prospects in the class with a free and easy mid-80s fastball and plus slider.
