I’m in the bleachers at Cary-Grove High School, hands feeling like frozen Eggos, the sky is turning a darker shade of gray, and the NCAA national championship game is tipping off in an hour. This game between Cary-Grove and Fremd should’ve been over a long time ago, and the guy to my left keeps talking about extra innings.

You have to feel for Flyers Classic tournament director John Sarna. For the last eight years the man has put on the most highly respected in-season tournament, secured the best teams, given players the opportunity to compete on a top-notch field and generally busted his hump to provide a service for Illinois high school baseball.

And, at least in the last three years, all Sarna has gotten in return is rain, stress, lightning, headaches, more rain, and attendance-deterring weather. This year’s field is the best Sarna has ever assembled.

I spoke with Mother Nature’s press secretary late Friday night, roughly two hours after I lost the feeling in my toes at a doubleheader in Plainfield. The press secretary – a throaty woman named Jan who spoke with a smoker’s wheeze – advised me to “man-up or purchase wool socks.”  True, I do need to man up, but that is beside the point.
