East Coast Sox at Baum Stadium

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

The East Coast Sox made a rare trip into Arkansas on Saturday and gave me an opportunity to run down some players several players from Central and East Arkansas. They played two competitive scrimmage games at Baum Stadium. Here is some player evaluations from Saturday.

Pitchers

2016, RHP, Cade Canada, White Hall HS
Canada is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hander with a large frame and an athletic build. He pitches from a H ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action. He competed in the strike zone mainly with a sinking fastball at 80-82 mph. He threw a few four seams that reached 86 mph. His sinker produced consistent groundball out during his outing. He complimented his sinker with a breaking ball he commanded for strikes but lacked consistent shape and depth. Mechanically he is sound with repeatable actions and rhythm. Overall Canada has a feel to pitch and with a large frame, and good arm action. I would like him to have a more aggressive mentality and attack hitters with the his fastball more consistently.

Christian Goshen RHP 2016 North Little Rock HS
Goshen is a 5-foot-11, 175 right-hander, with a medium frame and a solid build. He has a quick arm from a ¾ arm slot. He could stand to clean up his arm action as he stabs in the back right now. In the first inning of work he flashed 88 three times but was consistently 83-86 throughout his outing.  The curveball was throw with sharp 11/5 break. The change up was thrown with fastball arm speed with and arm-side run. Goshen allowed just 1 run over his 3 innings of work with 3 strike outs and 1 walk.

Catchers

2016 C, Ben Bailey, North Little Rock HS
Bailey is a 5-foot-11 175-pound, left-handed hitting catcher with a medium frame and an athletic build. He is an advanced hitter with the ability to hit the ball to all fields. He has a short compact swing with a line drive swing that keeps the bat in a hitting zone for a long time. Defensively he is sound blocking and receiving at a high level. He has a quick release and an accurate arm, throwing pop times 2.0-2.1 on a consistent basis. Overall Baily is an advanced offensive player that is adequate behind at the plate at the collegiate level. Bailey had a multi-hit game, defensively he did a good job managing the pitchers, and controlling the run game.

Infielders

2017 MIF, Ryan Flake, Greenbrier HS
Flake is a 6-foot 175 pound middle infielder with an athletic frame and build. Offensively he had a solid multi-hit day, recording singles to all field. He has a compact line drive swing that keeps his barrel in the hit zone for an extended period of time. Defensively he showed smooth actions and footwork as he played through the ball. He had a quick release and an accurate arm from short stop. I was unable to determine how fast Flake is as he ran 5.15-5.5 home to first on a consistent basis. Defensively he showed above average first step quickness. Overall Flake is a sound player with an above average skill set at all phases of the game.

2017 CIF Adrian Hannah, Searcy HS
Hannah is a 6-foot-2 200-pound corner infielder with a large frame and physical build. He was the most polished left-handed hitter in the games. His uphill bat path with fast bat speed produces exit velocity up to 88 mph. He repeats his swing maintaining rhythm and balance throughout. Defensively he has some stiffness to his hands and foot work but performed well during games. He has an accurate arm with a fluid exchange. Overall Hannah is a polished hitter, as he develops athletically he will improve defensively and should develop into a quality collegiate player. Hannah impressed in batting practice showing pull power that he has not displayed while I have been present previously.

2017 MIF, Cameron Tissue, Catholic HS
Tissue is a 5-foot-11, 160- pound infielder with an athletic frame and build. Defensively he has smooth footwork as he plays through the baseball with soft hands. He has a quick exchange and a loose accurate arm. He throws the ball 80 mph the infield. Offensively he starts from a tall stance with a smooth load. He works off a stiff front side driving his hips through the baseball. He has a line drive swing that allowed him to spray the ball to all fields during the scrimmages. Overall Tissue is a polished player, as he add strength he will be an impressive collegiate player.
