State Championship Recap: Day 1

Baum Stadium is the nicest amateur baseball facility in the state of Arkansas, so it is only fitting that the Arkansas State Baseball Tournaments were hosted there. He is a look at the first four games of Championship week end.

4A Star City High School vs Arkadelphia High School

Arkadelphia HS started the year on a mission to win their third consecutive 4A State Championship. They had a great season, however they fell short losing to Star City 4-3 in 9 innings on Friday.

Arkadelphia scored first, scoring one run in the 2nd inning off of a 2015 INF/OF Cody Bethel double.

Star City answered in the third when 2016 MIF Blake Wynne and 2016 C Austin Powell hit back to back singles. Powell’s single drove home 2016 OF/INF Cole Muck Leroy who reached on a walk. Wynn later scored on a passed ball to take a 2-1 lead.

Arkadelphia regained the lead in the 5th 2015 OF Brooks Burnham doubled in a run and later scored on 2015 MIF Clay Wilson’s single.

Star City tied the game in the bottom of the 5th when 2016 RHP/OF Garry Hill squeezed in Wynn, tying the game 3-3.

Pitching took over from their with 2016 RHP Garry Hill and 2016 RHP Ty Koster throwing shutout innings until the 9th.

In the 9th Hill was relieved by 2016 C/RHP Austin Powell due to AAA rules on pitching limits. Powell worked a clean 9th and picked up the win, when 2016 OF Ty Brown single to right field brought home the game winning run.

1A Armorel High School vs Taylor High School

Armorel HS won its schools 3rd State Championship in baseball Friday afternoon by defeating Taylor 10-0 in 6 innings.

2015 Ashston Kennedy dominated on the mound throwing a complete game two hit shutout not allowing a hit until the 4th.

His dominance gave 2016 OF Nash Winters and the rest of the Tiger offense time to jump out to a 7-0 lead over the first three innings. Winters led the way with a 4-4 2RBI day.

The Armorel team seemed focus and well prepared, this was their 3rd consecutive trip to the finals and this time they came out on the right side of the scoreboard.

7A Bentonville High School vs Conway High School

Bentonville HS used two big innings and one big arm to beat Conway 6-5 in the 7A State Championship Game.

2016 RHP Kasey Ford picked up the win for Bentonville throwing 7 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits, while striking out 6, walking 5 and hitting 3 Conway hitters. Ford showed great competiveness making big pitching in big spots throughout the game.

Bentonville scored 3 runs in the 2nd and in the 5th to jump out to a 6-1 lead over Conway. Highlighting the runs was a 2 RBI single by 2015 MIF Blake Werner in the 2nd and back to back singles that drove in runs by 2015 OF Paul Rouse and 2016 INF Ben Nordin.

Conway gave its best effort to comeback, chipping away at the lead scoring 2 in the 5th, 1 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th.

This win give Bentonville’s baseball team its’ first state title since 2002, Conway comes up short but with starting 7 underclassmen look for the Wampus Cats to make a return trip soon.

2A Ouachita High School vs Magnet Cove High School

Ouachita HS road a great pitching performance by 2016 RHP/MIF Logan Huneycutt to beat Magnet Cove HS 4-1 in the 2A finals.

Huneycutt dominated the game pitching 7 innings allowing just 3 hits, striking out 7 while allowing just one walk. The lone run scored by Magnet Cove was unearned.

2016 CIF Alex Volz led the offense for the Warriors going 3-3 with an RBI. 2015 Hunter McDade also had two RBI’s on a hit, and Huneycutt helped his cause driving in the other run.

This is Ouachita High School’s second state championship in baseball.
