Unsigned Senior Showcase: Infielders

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Our Unsigned Senior Showcase had several talented infielders. Josh Stephens, a middle infielder from Springdale Har-ber High School was our most complete infielder. Today we look at the other top infielders.

Ryan Mallison. MIF, Jacksonville HS,
Mallison, a 5-foot-8 160-pound second baseman, stole the show during batting practice. He had two good rounds squaring up every ball and staying inside balls on the inner third driving them, showing doubles power. He starts from an open stance, however he gets everything online and maintains good balance through extension. Mallison has an advanced approach couple that with fast bat speed, line drive swing, he is ready to be one of the most consistent hitters of the 2015 class. Defensively, he was impressive also. He shows an average arm that is accurate. He makes up for whatever arm strength he is lacking with a quick and clean exchange. His footwork is fluid and plays through balls consistently.

Caleb Gray, 3B, Har-Ber HS,
The 6-foot 180 pound 3B showed good athleticism running a 6.9 in the 60 and a 3.95  home to first. Defensively, Gray showed fluid footwork and an accurate arm. His exchange could be speed up if he would shorten his arm action. He plays through the baseball and average hands. Offensively, he showed a short compact swing with little movement. During his exit velocity he registered 81 mph three times. His batting practice rounds showed the ability to hit the ball to all fields with a line drive swing and good balance. Gray gets his lower half involve but as he swings he comes up and out of his legs, I would like to see him stay in them longer and the power/ exit velocity would increase.

Drew Duncan, MIF, Mayflower HS,
Duncan, a 6-foot-1 170-pound short stop ran a 6.7 60 and flashed his athletic skill set during our defensive evaluations. He had quick footwork, a quick exchange and an accurate arm. He out athletes balls at times, with average hands. His offensive game is similar to his defensive game. He is a good athlete with fast bat speed and good balance. His swing plane is uphill and the lower is used very limited. With that being said he still had exit velocity of 81 mph.
