5A Final Four Preview

The Class 5A Final Four will be played at All-City Stadium Friday and Saturday.  Chatfield enters the weekend with an automatic bid in the 5A state championship game, and will have to be beaten twice.

Here's a capsuled look at each team:

Mountain Visa (18-6) vs. Grandview (15-9) 10:30 A.M.

About the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles: Mountain Vista has been steady for most of the season playing in a lot of close games, and make back to back appearances in the 5A Final 4. In the 5A Final 8, they have won games by the score of 3-2 against Rock Canyon, and came back down 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning against Regis Jesuit only to come back and win in extra innings 11-10. Then they lost in extra innnings 3-2 against Chatfield. The Golden Eagles are lead by seniors Marc Mumper, and Will Dixon. Mumper, who is currently ranked No. 7 in the 2015 class and is committed to Grand Canyon University, has been one of the most important players to any team's success at the 5A level in 2015. Playing shortstop, Mumper at the plate has had 70 AB's in the regular season and lead the Golden Eagles with 22 RBI's with 8 doubles, and hit .350. On the mound Mumper took the ball this year and threw 29 innings going 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA striking out 37. Always underated, Will Dixon was a reliable anchor. Currently ranked No. 35 in the 2015 class and committed to Colorado Mesa, Dixon was 5-1 in 44 IP with a 3.00 ERA and 53 strikeouts during the regular season. Over the last two years Dixon has a 13-1 record. 2015 speedy INF Brandon Formby hit .387, and 2016 Cooper Shearon led the team with 5 HR.

About the Grandview Wolves:
Grandview started off the season great then hit a little snag in the middle of their league season. One of the great coaches in our state Dean Adams announced his retirement half way through the season. Seniors Eric Mingus and Keifer Glau provided leadership and offense. Mingus who is currently ranked No. 50 in the 2015 class and is committed to Iowa Western C.C had another great year at the plate. Mingus hit .463 with 10 doubles and 3 triples. No. 31 ranked 2015 and Northern Colorado commit Glau led the team with 29 runs, 13 stolen bases, and hit .405. No 14 ranked 2016 Grant Schroeder and No. 34 2016 Nicholas Morris bring as good of a 1-2 punch on the mound the final 4 teams have to offer. 2016 2B Tyler Smith led the team with 22 RBI's, and 2015 OF Ben Marshall

Rock Canyon (20-4) vs. Chatfield (14-10) 1:00 P.M.

About the Jaguars:
The Rock Canyon Jaguars are flying under the table more than any other 20 win team in recent memory. The Jaguars lost 2 games by one run, and another by just two, and all three of those losses came in the 6th inning or later. They are solid defensively, and offensively. Led by seniors Chris Givin, Josh White, and Bryce Dietz, the Jaguars could still be the favorite to win the whole thing. No. 17 ranked 2015 and Xavier commit Givin has had an outstanding season hitting .540 while also going 6-1 on the mound with a 6-1 record and 2.44 E.R.A. in 44 IP. No. 44 ranked 2015 and Army commit Josh White led the team with 7 homeruns and 22 RBI's playing 2B, and No. 34 2015 and Cal Lutheran commit Bryce Dietz continues to dazzle on the mound going an impressive 10-0 on the season with a 2.40 E.R.A. in 58 innings pitched. Juniors Daryl Myers and Coby Zimmerman each hit over .400 and led the team with 8 doubles.

About the Chargers:
Not many teams in the country could start the season 2-9 and have an opportunity to already have a place in the states big school state championship game. The Chargers have won 11 of their last 12 games which has included 7 straight wins in the district and state playoffs. No. 12 2015 and Miami of Ohio commit Kyle Winkler has gotten hot at the right time. After a slow start Winkler is hitting .373 on the season hitting some clutch homeruns in the playoffs. No. 84 ranked 2015 Sean O'Dell has been pacing the Chargers leading the team with a .478 batting average and 8 stolen bases while also going 3-1 on the mound with a 2.53 E.R.A. Senior Jack Carstensen also is hitting over .400 and leads the team with 3 homeruns. Senior Matt Watson is 3-0 on the season with a 1.18 E.R.A. in 28 innings pitched. No 45 2016 Mike Lucero finished the season strong on the mound going 3-0 with a 0.88 E.R.A. in 16 IP and 19 strikeouts.
