 Mountain Vista vs  ThunderRidge (4-16-14)

Nick Leonard, RHP, Mountain Vista HS

Athletic right hander with a 6-foot-3, 185 pound body frame, headed to Washington State on scholarship this fall. Throws with a clean arm action coming from an upper ¾ arm slot, close to being more over the top, with above average arm-speed. Fastball had decent movement into right handed batters and consistently sat at 88-89 mph throughout his seven innings of work and topping out at 92mph on multiple occasions. Throws a 12-6 curveball that showed a nice break clocking in at 74-75mph, but did leave it hanging on a few batters that resulted in hits. Used his change-up effectively, at 81-82 mph, displaying good deception.  He had solid command and spotting with his full arsenal of pitches.  Also showed excellent foot speed on a few picks to first base. Pitched an outstanding complete game shutout today, including 13 punch outs. Definitely a player to watch.

AJ Jones, RHP, ThunderRidge HS, 2014

Average prospect frame at 6-foot-0, and a thick 180 pounds. AJ has committed to BYU and will be playing baseball for the Cougars this fall.  He shows a good repeatable delivery with an easy, clean arm action coming from a ¾ slot. In the first four innings he was working at 88-90 mph with his fastball, which displayed tailing movement. He topped out at 91mph on multiple occasions He also flashed a tight spinning slider sitting consistently around 80-82mph. Worked his pitches well low in the zone with the exception of a few at bats he left the ball high which resulted in hits, most notably in the fifth inning when he gave up a 3-run triple. AJ pitched a fairly good game today, giving up only four hits and striking out 8 batters.  Thought the outcome didn’t go AJ’s way, he will be a prospect to keep an eye on the rest of the season.

Brody Westmoreland, SS, ThunderRidge HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 185 pounds with a strong, athletic frame.  The prototypical senior SS who also plays QB on the football team, is committed to San Diego State.  Although he has a nice athletic frame, he still has room to add to his physical strength.  He has a cannon throwing from deep in the hole, and displayed it a handful of times today.  What impresses me with Brody is his glove to hand transfer and quick release of the baseball. He flashed very soft and quick hands in a smooth double play up the middle.  His footwork is clean and takes good angles toward ground balls. He struggled from the plate today, but he has a nice swing, keeping his hands tight to his body with nice extension at contact.  Is a hustle player, Does not jog anywhere on the field today. He is an exciting player to watch.
