Fall Prospect ID: Catching Analysis

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director of Scouting

The Fall Prospect ID Showcase took place on Sunday October 19th, at Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton, CO.  This event featured several talented players in Colorado’s 2015 through 2018 classes. Starting off our positional analysis we will take a look at the top catching prospects.

Here’s a look at the top catching prospects at this year’s Fall Prospect ID Showcase:

Catching prospects

Conner Helbling, C, Highlands Ranch, 2015                  Conner Helbling
5-foot-10, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a strong athletic frame. Moved well behind the plate and showed quick feet on throws to second and on bunts up the line.  Pop times of 2.01/2.04/2.05 were tops for the day.  An average arm with a velocity of 73 is complimented by his accuracy, placing three throws on the correct side of the bag.  At the plate he uses a 60/40 powerful lower body stance.  Good leg drive through the ball produced exit velos of 75 and 76 mph.

Tyler Carrasco, C, Dakota Ridge, 2016      Tyler Carrasco
5-foot-10, 180-pound hard working catcher with soft hands and little movement behind the plate when accepting pitches.  Carrasco has shown steady growth at each showcase event and recorded pop times on Sunday of 2.05/2.10.  He moves very well to block pitches and on bunts in front of the plate.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stance, with minimal load with a short path that generates line drives with carry. Slash type hitter. Keeps hands inside of the ball and hits the ball very well to the opposite field.

Carter Bell, C, Dakota Ridge, 2017    Carter Bell
5-foot-6, 112-pound.  Showed quick, efficient feet behind the plate and is quick to balls on the first and third base lines.  He finished the day with pop times between 2.20-2.22.  Also threw 66 mph from the position. Young catcher who works hard behind the plate. Just needs to add strength and weight. Right-handed hitter who hits from a balanced stance, very little stride, with a short bat path creating consistent contact.
