Fall Prospect ID Outfield Analysis

By Jeff Markle
Assistant Director of Scouting

The Fall Prospect ID Showcase took place on Sunday October 19th, at Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton, CO.  This event featured several talented players in Colorado’s 2015 through 2018 classes. We have already taken a look at Catchers, Corners and MIF, today we look at Outfielders.

Marc Alva, OF/RHP, Columbine, 2015alva
5-foot-8, 155-pound left-handed hitting RHP/OF Defensively charges ball aggressively in the outfield and threw 73 mph. On the mound threw 74-76 mph with a quick, high ¾ arm slot and a solid feel for three pitches. His 67-68 mph curveball showed slurry 11/5 sweeping action and was thrown for strikes. Has a quick pick to first base.  Hits from a balanced stance and hands load back smooth. Swing produces explosive bat speed with a bat path that is level with good extension through the zone. Has gap to gap line drive power that produces 84 mph exit velocity. Gets in trouble when he wants to lift ball. When he stays square through the ball he produces very hard line drives.

Ryan Faircloth, OF, Dakota Ridge High School, 2016
5-foot-10, 150-pound athletic outfielder impressed with an outfield velocity at 78 mph, but we have seen him throw 81 from the position before. Throws from a long ¾ slinging arm slot with some accuracy.  Hits from an athletic slightly closed setup, load is minimal with hands already back with a good approach up the middle of the field. Showed good bat speed with a short level bat path produced several line drives from gap-to-gap with 80 mph exit velocity.

Liam Mann, OF/RHP, Chatfield High School, 2018mann
5-foot-11, 140-pound outfield/right-handed pitcher has good developing athletic ability.  Moves well on balls in the outfield both left and right and shows good speed closing on balls in front of him.  A straight over the top throwing motion delivers and accurate ball with a outfield velo of 68 mph.  On the mound, he has good command of both sides of the plate for his age, fastball maxed out at 71 mph and showed a 52 mph curve and 61 mph change.  A smooth easy delivery will allow his arm to catch up to his body as he grows over the next few years.  At the plate, Mann hits from an upright, 50/50 balanced stance.  Good lower body push produced an exit velo of 75 mph.  His swing is built to drive the ball up the middle and to the right center gap, needs to develop power on the ball inside.

Franky Shearn, OF/C, Columbine High School, 2018shearn
5-foor-11, 153-pound right-handed outfielder already has the speed to get people to take notice.  Shearn uses 6.8 speed to move on balls into the gaps and behind him.  Needs to develop arm strength to go along with foot speed.  Threw 60 mph outfield velo in the event.  At the plate, he is a developing hitter.  Descent exit velo of 70 mph is on display on balls inside, but needs to develop the ability to hit to all fields.

Braden Smith, OF, Lakewood High School,  2016smith
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed outfielder impressed with legitimate physical athletic ability.  Threw 75 mph from the outfield from long, loose, high ¾ arm slot with good hands, playing through the baseball aggressively when fielding.  Impressed everyone with running a 6.73 60.  Hits from a balanced athletic setup, hands load back smoothly, creating good separation. Has leg kick that he gets down early and shows explosion with his lower half. Bat speed is fast with a short path and good extension producing line drive gap-gap power producing 76 mph exit velocity off the tee.
