Marc Mumper Interview, MIF/P Mountain Vista, 2015

By JEFF LETOFSKY
PBR Colorado Senior Writer

Marc Mumper is the baseball equivalent to a basketball gym rat.

Growing up as the son of a coach, Mumper is one of Colorado's top returning players for the 2015 high school baseball season.

The Mountain Vista High School senior has committed to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. He's played both shortstop and second base and has been used sparingly on the mound, although he's expected to toe the rubber more often his senior season.

Mumper recently was one of 40 participants at PBR Colorado's Top Prospect Games at Cherry Creek High School in mid-August and talked about his past, present and future.

He was a prominent performer in getting the Golden Eagles to the Class 5A Final  Four this past spring, hitting .347 with a team-leading 29 runs and a .478 OBA.

Called a slick-fielding infielder by PBR Colorado scout John Cackowski, Mumper has good range up the middle with gap-to-gap power and a solid approach at the plate (17 walks in 2014).

The 5-foot-10, 155-pounder is projected to play middle infield at Grand Canyon. He admits he must get bigger and stronger to be able to play at  that  level.

"That's where I love to to play. I love being up the middle," said Mumper, who played with the Slammers this past summer. "It was nice to have a heavy summer playing games but we travelled a lot and it was relaxing at the same time."

At the Cherry Creek event, Mumper was clocked at 6.62 in the 60, had an infield velo of 84 and exit velo of 89. On the mound, his fastball varied between 84 and  86 with a slider in the 73-74 mph range.
He characterizes his defensive ability.

"Defense is the strong point of my game," he said. "I feel like I'm gifted defensively, I know what I'm doing out there. I probably could throw better with velocity and accuracy. It all depends on the day and how my arm is feeling."

Offensively, Mumper is a thorn in opponent's sides.

"I need to get better with situational hitting but it's something I work on a lot," he said. "I usually have a good plan at the plate putting the ball in play, steal  some bags, score some runs and produce some runs."

Mumper has put together a solid resume.  He's been named a Baseball Factory All-American honorable mention, was part of the Colorado Futures Game, a member of the Mountain West USA Baseball NTIS Team and was a PBR-Colorado all-state honorable mention.

He's not sure exactly what he wants to study at Grand Canyon but knows he wants to be involved in baseball following his career.

"After playing four years at Grand Canyon, I want to come back and coach, be a graduate assistant somewhere," Mumper said. "That's my ulimate  goal."
