PBR Colorado Spotlight Game: Junior Sunbelt Coverage

Team Colorado loses to Team Arizona 3-2

Team Colorado started off the day 1-1 in the Junior Sunbelt Tournament. The first game they faced off against Team Arizona in a game that was well played by both teams. TCU commit Jake Eissler of ThunderRidge took the mound for Team Colorado, and he was opposed by Gonzaga commit Casey Elgumina.

Team Arizona would strike first in the bottom of the 2nd inning with two base hits off Eissler, but then Eissler would settle and get out of the inning only giving up one run.

From there the game settled down with both pitchers trading 1-2-3 innings. Team Colorado needing Eissler to pitch later in the tournament pulled him after 4 innings with a line of 1 run and 2 hits given up.

Cameron Brown of D’Evelyn came in relief in the bottom of the 5th and with runners at first and 3rd and two outs induced a hard ground ball to Ohio Commit Tyler Smith of Grandview. Smith gloved it but rushed the throw to first pulling Rocky Mountain’s John Sorensen slightly off the bag and Sorensen could not apply the tag causing Arizona to score. On the very next pitch Brown induced a hard ground ball to Eaton’s Matt Burkart at 3rd and right before Burkart was about to glove it the ball took a record breaking ridiculous bad hop off the lip and shot over his head bringing in Arizona’s 3rd run.

In the top of the 6th inning Texas A&M commit Tommy Gilman of Columbine HS hit a Home Run to right center off Elgumina, still pitching. Brown hitting for Eissler would show off his speed and get an infield hit, then Sorensen would drive a ball deep to right center bringing in Brown to cut the lead to 3-2.

That would be all offense Team Colorado would generate losing to Team Arizona in a well played game by both sides that only took an hour and forty-five minutes. Team Colorado’s next game would be against Oklahoma Gold on Saturday night.

Team Colorado beats Oklahoma Gold 8-3

Team Colorado beat Oklahoma Gold 8-3 on Saturday night behind strong pitching and an offense that is starting to find it's groove

 North Carolina commit Bo Weiss went 4 strong innings allowing 2 unearned runs striking out 8 batters, and was relieved by Jerome Bohannon, and Matt Burkart. Together the three only gave up 3 hits in the game and struck out 13.

In the bottom of the 3rd Team Colorado took an early 2-0 lead off a double by hot-hitting John Sorensen plating Tommy Gillman, and Jake Eissler.

Oklahoma Gold would tie the game at 2 in the top of the 4th inning, but Team Colorado would take the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring 3 runs highlighted by a 2-run single by Riley Gregory. 

Oklahoma posed one more threat in the 6th inning, but Matt Bukart came in relief with the bases loaded up 6-3 but got a big strikeout to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 6th inning Gilman would drive in Quin Cotton, and Bailey Collins would help drive in another run padding Team Colorado's lead to 8-3 which would end up being the final score.

Team Colorado beats Team Georgia 9-7

Team Colorado and Team Georgia traded the lead four times on Sunday, but Team Colorado ended up on top with a 9-7 win in seven innings over Georgia in a back and forth affair.

The top of the first inning saw Georgia take an early 1-0 lead, but it didn't take long for Team Colorado to respond as it scored 6 runs in the bottom of the first innnig highlighted by a two-run double by Ty Smith, a two-run single by Jerome Bohannon, and a two-run home run by Zane Phelps.

Georgia would battle back, and eventually tie the game 6-6 in the top of the 4th inning, but Team Colorado would not fold. In the bottom of the 4th responded with a single by Riley Gregory, and a huge 2-run home run by Quin Cotton.

Team Colorado was backed on the mound by Dalton Lind, Austin Alarid, Grant Schroeder, and Brice Johnson. Alarid would get the win, and Brice Johnson would get the save.

Next up for Team Colorado is Team Canada at 1:00 MST on Monday 6/8/15.
