Game Recap

The Golden Eagles squaring off against the Wolves featured two stellar athletes on the bump today, in Senior Grand Canyon commit Marc Mumper and junior right hander Grant Schroeder

Mumper who threw 7 impressive innings was very stingy only giving up 1 hit through 3 innings of play including 2 strikeouts and no walks.  Schroeder was his equal after two early walks in the 1st inning he was able to strand the two runners on base and went on to sit Mountain Vista down in order in the second inning.  The game’s first real action came in in the bottom of the 3rd with senior Brandon Formby getting the inning going with a double.  An error by the second baseman Tyler Smith put runners on 1st and 3rd.  Mumper would go on to hit a sac fly to LF plating the 1st run of the game.

The action would continue, though this time it would be led by the Grandview Wolves senior OF Ben Marshall with a leadoff single, however he would be caught stealing a pitch later.  Senior SS Eric Mingus would draw a walk and Jr 2b Tyler Smith would reach base on a fielder’s choice putting runners on 1st and 3rd.   Smith made an attempt to steal second base and looked as though he would be hosed but senior catcher Brady Subart overthrew into CF which would allow Mingus to score tying the game at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles would strike next in the bottom of the 5th.  Formby reached base on a hit by pitch, bringing up Freshman speedster Zach Paschke who executed an excellent push bunt that was a little too far out of Schroeder’s reach putting runners on 1st and 2nd.  This would bring up the team Captain, Mumper, who would deliver with a 2-run RBI double stretching Mountain Vista’s lead 3-1.

Top of the 6th, Grandview wouldn’t lay down easily with a pair of singles by Marshall and Mingus.  Senior DH, Nick Brown would come up big time with an opposite field rocket to left centerfield plating 2 runs, and putting the Wolves on top 4-3.  Schroeder would put the Golden Eagles down in order in the bottom of the 6th, and Mumper would do the same in the top of 7, notching 2 more K’s (5k’s on the day).

Bottom of 7th with the game in Grandview’s control, senior LF Tyler Stromberg led the inning off with a single.  Next batter up, Brandon Formby would walk on 4 straight balls and Paschke would lay down a sac bunt moving runners in scoring position on 2nd and 3rd.  Mumper would draw an intentional walk to load the bases bringing up senior 3B, Will Dixon.  Dixon would hit a sacrifice fly to RF scoring Stromberg and tying the game up 4-4.

Top of the 8th, sophomore right handed pitcher Jalen Saiz would come on in relief for the Golden Eagles and would sit the Wolves down in order giving Mountain Vista the final shot at winning the game.

Bottom of the 8th with senior pitcher Coley Hakes on in relief for Grandview.  Mountain Vista wastes no with a leadoff single by junior Cooper Shearon.  Jalen Saiz would walk followed by a sac bunt by sophomore CF John Krysa putting runners in scoring position on 2nd and 3rd.  Grandview would intentionally walk Tyler Stromberg setting the stage for Brandon Formby.  The senior would play hero hitting the game winning RBI propelling Mountain Vista to a 5-4 thriller over Grandview.

Mountain Vista is set to square off against the Rock Canyon Jaguars for a chance to play in the title game against the Chatfield Chargers.
