Preseason All-State Outfield Analysis

The Preseason All-State Showcase took place Sunday March 1st at Slammers South.  90 players from the 2015 and 2016 classes were on display at this event.  Prep Baseball Report Colorado will bring you analysis by position of the players who participated in the showcase.   Continuing our showcase analysis are the outfielders and outfield/pitchers, where we once again saw strong arms and good speed on display.   To see the overall stats of the event click here. 

Top Outfield Prospects:

Austin Gussman, Horizon, 2016, LHP/OF
6-foot-0, 165-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder/LHP.  OF positional velocity of 84 MPH, high ¾ release, moves to ball with purpose, quick exchange, loose arm action. At the plate, 83 MPH exit velocity, athletic set up, smooth/simple load with leg kick. Has a line drive approach, quick bat speed that produces gap to gap power.  4.0 home to first.  On the mound, gets the most out of his frame, FB maxed out at 86 with good run.  Strong command of the outside part of the zone, CB was 66-68 MPH and CH was 74-75 MPH.  Good looking two position player.

Bailey Collins, Dakota Ridge, 2016, OF/1B
5-foot-11, 180 pound, left-handed hitting outfielder.  Was 77 from the outfield from a long arm action and max effort.  Possesses a strong athletic frame.  Defensively, showcased good hands with fluid feet.  Plays through the baseball well.  Ran a 4.0 home to first.  At the plate starts in an athletic setup.  Load is smooth and uses a short stride.  Good use of the lower half.  Bat speed is quick with some barrel whip. Has opposite field power, but also saw him this fall turn on lower inside pitch for homerun. Had an exit velocity of 88 MPH.  Consistently gets to extension.  Plays first base as well.

Tyler Matheny, Pine Creek, 2015, OF
5-foot-9, 150-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder.  High ¾ release, loose arm action, quick exchange, mostly accurate throws, 87 MPH OF velocity, top velocity for outfielders at the event. At the plate, 83 MPH exit velocity, balanced stance, some hand load, level bat path, aggressive bat speed, gap-to-gap approach, potential for pull power, 4.22 home-to-first.

Cameron Brown, D’Evelyn, 2016, OF/LHP
5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitting outfielder/LHP was 80 MPH from the outfield with carry.  Arm is loose and throws from a high ¾ slot.  Showcased athletic actions defensively with fluid feet and a clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball well.  Ran a 4.18 home to first.  At the plate hits from an athletic setup with wide feet.  Short stride with average use of the lower half.  Showcased average bat speed.  Bat path is long and on a level swing plane.  Registered a 78 MPH exit velocity.  From the mound, Brown lived between 77-78 MPH FB, maxing out once at 79 MPH.  Two other pitches were 67 MPH CB and 73 MPH CH.

Ryan Faircloth, Dakota Ridge, 2016, OF/RHP
5-foot-10, 150-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder.  Over-the-top release, mostly accurate throws, loose arm action, 70 MPH positional velocity, quick exchange, fluid footwork. At the plate, athletic set-up, smooth load, no wasted movement, quick bat, level to extension, repeatable mechanics, gap-to-gap approach, exit velocity 80 MPH, 4.46 home-to-first.    

Tanner Johnson, Chatfield, 2016, OF/RHP
5-foot-11, 155-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder.  Long/loose arm action, high ¾ arm slot, 85 MPH positional velocity, top 3 for OF at this event, somewhat accurate throws, work behind the ball and plays thru, Offensively, balanced set up, smooth load, line-drive approach, fluid rhythm, 80 MPH exit velocity with gap to gap power, 4.56 home to first.  On the mound,  81 MPH max fastball, with good command of both sides of the plate.  Uses a 68 MPH curve and 66 MPH change to round out his pitches. 

Thomas Johnson, Eaglecrest, 2015, OF/LHP
6-foot-1, 175 pound, left handed hitting outfielder/LHP, was 76 from the outfield from a high ¾ slot.  Throws were accurate.  Possesses average hands defensively, with fluid feet.  Exchange is clean, and plays through the ball.  Ran a 4.07 home to first. At the plate hits from an athletic setup.  Loads back and uses a short stride.  Average use of the lower half with good balance throughout the swing.  Long path to the baseball.  Line drive type hitter.  Registered an exit velocity of 85 MPH.  On the mound, showed good control of three pitches.  76 MPH fastball with late movement.  CB and CH both registered 63-65 MPH.   

Sean Kelsen, Douglas County, 2016, OF/LHP
6-foot-0, 175-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder/LHP, was 80 MPH from the outfield using a long arm action and high ¾ slot.  Good feet and smooth exchange allows ball to get our quickly.  Plays through the baseball well.  Ran a 4.37.  At the plate starts tall and has a balanced stance with a smooth load.  Uses a small leg kick for timing.  Gets good use of the lower half and stays balanced throughout.  Level path to the baseball and gets to extension.  Fluid rhythm throughout the swing.  Registered an exit velocity of 91 MPH, top 3 for the event.  On the mound the LHP was consistent 77-79 FB and maxed out at 81 MPH.  Rounds our his pitches with a 57-62 MPH CH and 66-67 CB. 

Jordan Luthi, Legacy, 2016, OF/RHP
6-foot-0, 165-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder, At the plate, uses athletic stance, with short slight leg-kick with good leg drive, level bat path to extension, power to pull gap, quick bat speed with 86 MPH exit velocity, 4.44 home to first. Defensively, 86 MPH positional velocity, high ¾ release, mostly accurate throws with life, clean exchange, good routes to ball, fluid footwork. 

Mitch Menard, D’Evelyn, 2016, OF/LHP
6-foot-0, 175-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder/LHP, was 75 from the outfield from an over the top arm slot.  Showcased smooth hands defensively and decent feet.  Plays through the baseball.  Ran a 4.03 home to first. Offensively, has a tall stance, loads back using a short stride.  Gets some use of the lower half with overall good balance throughout the swing.  Bat speed is quick.  Long, level path to the baseball.  Gap to gap power with good rhythm throughout.  Registered an exit velocity of 83 MPH.  On the mound, FB was 76-79 with little movement, good change of speed on his other two pitches with 61-64 CB and 71-74 CH.  Change of speed and location were good at this event. 

Jonathon Miranda, Mullen, 2016, OF/2B
5-foot-9, 165-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder.  Over-the-top release, long/loose arm action, clean exchange, plays thru the ball, 81 MPH positional velocity, mostly accurate throws. Offensively, athletic stance, good lower half at contact.  Bat plane is level through the zone and quick hands produce an 84 MPH exit velocity, 4.25 home-to-first.  Plays second base as well.

Evan Montreal, Cherry Creek, 2016, OF/MIF
5-foot-9,155-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder.  High ¾ arm slot, works behind ball, quick exchange and footwork, fluid footwork, 74 MPH position velocity with accurate throws. Offensively has an athletic stance with slight crouch, smooth load and a leg kick. Shows some swagger, with level bat path and quick bat speed, level path to extension, gap-to-gap approach, consistent quality contact during batting practice, 80 MPH exit velocity. Ran a 4.12 home to first and plays Middle Infield as well.

Raymond Ruiz, Mullen, 2016, OF/RHP
5-foot-7, 125-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder/RHP, was 76 MPH from the outfield using a long arm action from a high ¾ slot.  Showcased good hands defensively with fluid feet and a clean exchange.  Ran a 4.25 home to first.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup with hands at the top of the zone.  Loads back with a short stride.  Possesses quick hand speed with a short, level path to the baseball.  Gets to extension, registered an exit velocity of 73 MPH.  On the mound, 75 MPH was max fastball, followed up with a 61-63 MPH CB and 68-69 CH.  Good command of the zone and hit spots at this event.    

Jordan Scheufele, Fairview, 2016, RHP/OF
6-foot-3, 207-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder and RHP, was 77 MPH from the outfield from a long arm action and high ¾ slot.  Throws were accurate.  Showcased smooth hands with good action through the ball.  Exchange is clean and plays through.  Ran a 4.72 home to first.  Offensively, starts balanced.  Loads back, hands are at the top of the hitting zone.  Slight load for timing.  Bat speed is good with an uphill path to the baseball.  Bat stays in the zone through extension producing line drives to the power side.  Registered an exit velocity of 86 MPH.  Max effort pitcher on the mound gets good drive from his lower half.  FB at this event maxed out at 82 MPH and ranged from 79-81 with good run away from the right-handed hitter.  Good change of speed with two other pitches, 68-70 MPH CB and 71-73 MPH CH. 

Ryan Vottiero, Regis Jesuit, 2016, OF
5-foot-6, 160-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder.  OF positional velocity of 76 MPH, over-the-top release, max effort on throws, accurate arm, works behind ball, quick exchange. At the plate, 82 MPH exit velocity, athletic stance, slightly open, level path to extension, consistent line drives to middle during BP. Potential lead-off type of hitter.  3.9 home to first was in the top 3 for this event.
