Q&A with No. 29 Ranked 2017 Ben Masi

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

Prep Baseball Report Colorado brought you the initial 2017 Colorado Player Rankings yesterday and now will begin to introduce you to the 2017 and 2018 players who are registered for the Underclass Invitational at Slammers South.  PBR Colorado begins our look at registered players with No. 29 PBR ranked 2017, Ben Masi, OF, Cherry Creek High School.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play:

Masi:  If I was to describe myself as a baseball player, I would say I'm a gap hitter with occasional power. Overall I have excellent pop, especially considering my size. One of my best attributes is my speed. I run a sub-five 40 and a sub-seven 60. Defensively I am a solid outfielder who can track the ball well. My arm strength is decent but could be improved. Overall I see myself as a great hitter with occasional pop and an above average outfielder.

PBR:  What would be your dream college to play baseball at?

Masi:  If I could pick any college in the country to play ball at it would be either Louisiana State University or the University of Oregon.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?

Masi:  On the field my best assets are my competitive nature, my willingness to work hard, and my coachability. Off the field I am a 3.3-3.5 student. Some of my best assets are my leadership and my ability to learn quickly.

PBR:  What does your off-season preparation look like this year compared to you freshman year?

Masi:  My off-season preparation this year consists of throwing, hitting, and some lifting. Very similar to my routine last year except this year I plan on doing more long toss to increase my arm strength.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?

Masi:  The best baseball advice I have ever received is that baseball is a game of failure and you need to work through these failures in order to make progress and succeed.

PBR:  What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?

Masi:  I do not have any real superstitious other than I never step on the foul line going on or off the field. The only routine I have is my basic pre-game routine of a jog to center and back, stretching, throwing, and sprints. Other than that I don't have any special superstitions or routines.

PBR:  What are your goals for:

This Season:  My goals for this upcoming season are to be the starting outfielder and a major contributor, both offensively and defensively, on Cherry Creek's Junior Varsity team.

Two Years:  My goals for two years from now are to be the starting center fielder on Cherry Creek's Varsity team and to lead the team to a state championship.

Four Years:   In four years I would love to be playing college baseball. My goal is a Division I program but I am open to all options.
