By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

Prep Baseball Report Colorado continues it's look at players who have committed to play at the next level, this time catching up over the Thanksgiving Break with the 6-foot-2, 190 pound, catcher from Arvada West High School, Jesse Gonzales.  An impressive left handed bat in the middle of the Wildcats line-up produced 20 hits last year and a .364 average.  Gonzales will be counted on heavily this spring if the Wildcats are going to defend their Jeffco League Crown and make a run deep into May.

PBR: Why did you choose Garden City J.C.?jesse

Gonzales:  Garden City just seemed like the right fit for me. A young coaching staff, amazing field, and nice facilities.

PBR: Where did Garden City first see you compete?

Gonzales:  Garden City first saw me this fall when I was playing for Cherry Creek.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play during your first year on campus?

Gonzales:  A middle of the line up hitter with some pop from the left side, and get some innings behind the plate.

PBR: Describe yourself as a baseball player to people who have not seen you play:

Gonzales:  Defensively I control the game very well. I make mental notes of what hitter do and have a solid understanding on how to get them out. Offensively I am hitter who waits for my pitch and can take the ball the other way. I am patient at the plate and get myself into good counts.

PBR:  What advice would you give about the recruiting process?

Gonzales:  Start early and visit multiple schools that way you can compare them to each other.

PBR:  What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Gonzales:  My Junior spring as a whole was very memorable. We won a league championship and were the first team in A-west history to go 8-0 in league. To be apart of that was very special.

PBR:  What would you say are your best assets both on and off the field that will help your team this year?

Gonzales:  Leadership is my best asset on and off the field!

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Gonzales:  Danny Vais has had the biggest impact on me as a player. He's taught me to work hard and has helped me out a lot.

PBR:  Do you have any game day or season superstitions or rituals?

Gonzales:  The only ritual I have before games is taking top-hand and bottom-hand swings in the cages before taking BP.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher/hitter you have faced in Colorado?

Gonzales:  The toughest pitcher I've faced in Colorado would probably be Jordan Halloway last spring.

PBR: What are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?

Gonzales:   Individually I want to hit 400 and hit 5 home runs. As a team I hope to win another league championship and go deep into the playoffs.
