Q&A with Pueblo East High School's Dylan Gavin

Name: Dylan Gavin
School: Pueblo East High School
Year: Senior (2014)
Position: IF/P
Height: 6 foot 3
Weight: 210
Commitment: Sioux Falls (S.D.)

PBR: Why did you commit early to play baseball at the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.)?
Gavin: I've always loved baseball growing up. They gave me a 20-day option to decide to take the scholarship they offered. I had a great opportunity so I jumped on it.

PBR: You were a member of the Class 4A state champion basketball team at East. Do you regret signing early for baseball after you had such a great basketball season?
Gavin: I had a couple of basketball coaches interested in me. I want to try and play both at Sioux Falls. I'm going to have a talk with the basketball coach. If not, I'm happy with my decision to play baseball. I just have take it and run with it.

PBR: How much of an affect did playing so late into the basketball season had on your baseball season?
Gavin: It was hard getting the timing back, being on the field every day. It  took a while to get the rhythm back. I wasn't seeing the ball very well. Even when I do hit the ball hard it seems like it's right at someone. I just have to stay with it.

PBR: You've played third base, shortstop, first base and pitched in high school. What's your ideal position?
Gavin: Going to college I'm going to play 3rd. But growing up I've played  shortstop, first base and pitched. I love pitching. I feel good out there when I do pitch. Anything to help the team.

PBR: What are some of your goals in college academically and athletically?
Gavin: Right now I'm undecided what I want to do academically as far as what I want to major in. I'm kind of leaning toward nursing. It's something that I want to do. Athletic-wise, I hope to go in and compete for a spot my freshman year. They told me there are seniors at third and first base. I'm going to compete and have a good time with it.

PBR: Do you have any ambition to play professional baseball?
Gavin: It's everyone's dream to play professionally. I'm going to keep working at it and see where the chips fall.

PBR: Who has been the greatest influence on you in your athletic career?
Gavin: My dad is always there, helping me taking extra hacks. He's always there and that helps out a bunch knowing he's there every game. The coach at Pueblo Central Drew Hirshon has helped me a lot as a player and in the recruiting  process. And (East coach) DJ Latino giving me a chance to play at the varsity level.

PBR: What areas of the game do you feel you need to work on to be succesful at the next level?
Gavin: Definitely work on my all-around game and my speed. I feel like I can get a lot better in the field. And at the plate to be more selective and when I get the pitch don't miss it. Keep working hard on every part of my game.
