Q&A with Underclass Invitational Participant Alex Fietek

Assistant State Director

Prep Baseball Report Colorado is ready to hit the ground running in 2016 with two major events.  The Underclass Invitational event at Slammers South will take take place on January 31st. Over the coming weeks, PBR Colorado will introduce you to 2018 and 2019 players who have committed to this event.  Continuing our look is 2018, RHP/3B, Alex Fietek from Windsor High School.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play:

Fietek: To those that have never seen me play I would describe myself as a confident, and a reliable player. I believe that this suits me because I try not to let the pressures of any situations affect me on the field.  I also work hard to be a good teammate.  This includes picking players up when they are down and having as much fun as I can while always having the goal to win every game we play.

PBR:  What would be your dream school to play baseball at?  If you have already committed to play at the next level, why did you choose that particular school?

Fietek: My dream school would be Vanderbilt University because of my past experience watching them play and studying their work ethic. I particularly enjoy watching the way they are coached and the way they compete.  I had a chance to watch them play in the CWS and you could really tell they all were having a great time.  You couldn’t tell if they were up 6 runs or if they were grinding out a 2-1 victory.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?

Fietek: I feel like my best assets on the field is getting emotional only when it necessary and my ability to work with my team. Off the field my best assets would be myself as a friend towards others as well as being a well rounded person and student.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?

Fietek: I have been fortunate to have some great coaches and role models as coaches starting from age 8 to my current High School coach.  Their baseball experience has ranged from my Dad to past professional players.  One common message they all have given to me was to really enjoy and treasure the time I have on the field with my teammates because it goes so fast. This has helped motivate me to work hard to become the best player and teammate I can be.

PBR: What does your off-season routine look like to prepare for the upcoming season?

Fietek: I play a lot of baseball during the year starting with the Spring Season then moving to the Summer and Fall seasons.  Because of this, my off-season routine starts with rest, both physically and mentally.  Around early November to the end of December, I work on strength and agility training along with basic hitting and fielding drills.  I also attend some one-day college sponsored camps that focus on hitting, pitching, and fielding drills.   Then around the first of the year I start my High School workouts.  This is generally the first time I really start throwing the baseball in some light bullpen sessions.  These workouts start ramping up in preparation for the spring season where is all starts again.  This off-season routine is focused on putting me in the best position to be both healthy and compete the first game of the Spring Season.

PBR:  What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?

Fietek: I guess I have all of the most common baseball superstitions.  When I am playing well I wear the same undershirts or socks, eat the same sunflower seeds, sit or stand in the same place in the dugout.  Then of course if I have a bad game or two I change it all up, rinse and repeat.

PBR:  What are your goals for:

This Season: Team goals are the same as it is every season, to win as many games as possible including a state championship.  Individually they are to play at the highest level and to have fun with my friends/teammates.  Doing well in the classroom is also a Goal that I have for myself.  I have set some specific individual goals for myself this year also.  Don’t follow a bad pitch with another bad pitch to limit a more than a 1 run inning, take a better early count hitting approach, have productive at bats with runners on, etc.

Two Years: I’m a sophomore, so in two years will be my senior season.  Along with the goals stated above, I also will have the goal of playing someplace beyond High School.  Because of this, I hope to be given the opportunity to have a commitment to a college that to continue my education and also to allow me to play the sport I love.

Four Years: Playing College baseball, doing well in school, experiencing college life and meeting new friends and teammates.
