Prep Baseball Report

Q&A with Underclass Invitational Participant James Kester

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

Prep Baseball Report Colorado is ready to hit the ground running in 2015 with two major events.  With the Underclass Invitational at Slammers South just two weeks away, limited spots are still available for this event. Over the next two weeks, PBR Colorado will continue to introduce you to 2017 and 2018 players who have committed to this event.  Continuing our second round look at registered players is James Kester, 5-foot11, 165-pound, MIF/RHP No. 35 ranked 2017.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play.

Kester:  I am a very hard-working, competitive player.  I play with intensity and heart, and I continue to learn and improve every time I'm on the field.

PBR:  What would be your dream school to play baseball at?

Kester:  Honestly, I don't have a dream school.  I just want to play baseball at the highest level I can.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?

Kester:  I believe one of my assets is my ability to persevere.  I have gone through struggles personally and on the baseball field.  I've had to make difficult choices, but I'm still here.  I am working hard in school, with basketball, and with baseball to make myself the best student and player I can be.

PBR:  What does your off-season preparation look like this year compared to your freshman year?

Kester:  I am currently playing basketball which is conditioning me and preparing me for the baseball season.  I am also practicing weekly with the baseball team working on batting and pitching.  These workouts are not much different from my freshman year because I was playing basketball and preparing for the baseball season then, as well.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?

Kester:  The best advice I have been given by many coaches is to believe in myself and not lose confidence in my abilities.  While it is difficult sometimes, I do try to follow this advice.

PBR:  What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?

Kester:  Some superstitions or routines that I have are I always wear the same wrist band on the same arm, I always run to the center field fence before a game, I put my shoes on the same way every time, and I complete pre-game warm ups.

PBR:  What are your goals for

This season:  I plan to gain confidence in myself and thus, improve my hitting consistency.  I plan to gain arm strength to improve my pitching speed.  Overall, I plan to be a valuable asset to my team and contribute to a winning season.  I plan to work hard in school to improve my GPA.

Two years:  I plan to be a starting varsity player with a leadership role on the team.  I plan to continue to increase my speed and strength.  My goal is to help  my school win a state championship.  I also hope to be committed to a D1 school by spring, 2017.

Four years:  I plan to be playing baseball in college or, by hard work and the grace of God, be playing in the MLB.
