Updated Overall 2017 Rankings Released

It’s been a busy three months since the last overall Class of 2017 rankings update. The late summer and fall season, both on the state and national levels, have shed more light on this talented junior class. Our updated Top 300 Class of 2017 rankings reflect everything our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff has seen.

It is important to note that the PBR overall rankings only include the states that we intimately know from our scouting staff. The updated Top 300 Class of 2017 rankings is comprised of our current 27-state coverage area, which now includes all New England states.

The 2017 class continues to get deeper in talent as more and more prospects have emerged recently.  There are lots of new names in the updated rankings, including the top 10. From top to bottom, there have been significant shakeups in the overall rankings.

Starting at the top, there’s a new No. 1 overall prospect: 1B/OF Alejandro Toral (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL). The physical 6-foot-1, 215-pound Miami recruit has continually showed elite left-handed power on the biggest national stages.

While Toral jumps three spots, SS Mark Vientos (Flanagan HS, FL) slides down to No. 2 after previously holding the top spot. The highly projectable 6-foot-3, 175-pound Vientos joins Toral in Miami’s stellar 2017 recruiting class.

OF/RHP Jordon Adell (Ballard HS, KY) features the most electric tools in the 2017 class, reminiscent of Monte Harrison (Lee’s Summit West HS, MO) in the 2014 class. The 6-foot-3 Louisville recruit runs a 6.5, was clocked in the mid-90s from the outfield, has been as high as 95 on the mound, with arguably the best bat speed in the class. Adell isn’t the only Kentucky product in the top 10, as 6-foot-9 RHP Ben Jordan (West Carter HS, KY) is also one of the top prospects in the 2017 class. Jordan is still uncommitted.

Also holding firm in the top 10 are a pair of Louisiana prospects – OF/LHP Daniel Cabrera (John Curtis HS, LA) and RHP Blayne Enlow (St. Amant HS, LA) – both Louisiana State recruits. Cabrera is arguably the top two-way player in the class, while Enlow continues his upward trend as one of the fastest-rising right-handers in the country. Hulking 6-foot-6, 245-pound RHP Nicholas Storz (Poly Prep Country Day HS, NY) is another LSU recruit who remains in the top 10 as well.

Three more Florida prospects round out the top 10, including a pair of newcomers. LHP Jordan Butler (Alonso HS, FL), a Florida recruit, has been a mainstay in the overall rankings for more than a year. The biggest riser in the country is LHP Jake Eder (Atlantic HS, FL), a hard-throwing 6-foot-4, 210-pounder who has recently emerged as one of the nation’s top prospects after he topped out at 93 mph in October. A relatively unknown prospect prior, Eder is still uncommitted.  SS Freddie Zamora (Miami Killian HS, FL) is arguably the top defensive shortstop in the class and climbs into the top 10.

Outside the top 10, there were many big risers, led by OF Quentin Holmes (McClancy Memorial HS, NY), SS Francis Villaman (Olympia HS, FL), RHP/3B Joseph Perez (American Heritage HS, FL), RHP/SS Ben Casparius (Staples HS, CT), CJ Van Eyk (Steinbrenner HS, FL), RHP Conner Nurse (Washington HS, WV), 3B Buddy Kennedy (Millville HS, NJ), INF/OF Leugim Castillo (Lancaster HS, NY), SS Jeter Downs (SLAM Charter HS, FL) and RHP Austin Marozas (Plainfield South HS, IL), to name a few.
