5A State Semifinal Roundup: Clay vs. Rockledge



Clay vs. Rockledge

Andy Toelken has led the Clay High School Blue Devils (23-7) in big games all year. The biggest game of his career came in the 5A State Semifinal and he did not disappoint.  Toelken (SJR State) pitched a 1 hit shutout against the Rockledge Raiders (25-6) to put the Blue Devils in the state championship game. Although he struck out only 1 batter, Toelken dominated by filling up the strike zone and letting his defense work. Clay scored early with RBI singles from Luke Suchon (Seminole State) and Hunter Alexander (Florida). In the sixth,Coach Thompson entered pinch runner, Josh Lambert, who scored to make it 3-0.  For Rockledge, the lone hit was a double by Michael Hall in the 3rd inning.  Mason Studstill threw a complete game for Rockledge in the loss, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. Going into the state semifinal game, Studstill had only given up a total of 5 runs the entire year. Mason finishes the year with a 7-2 record.  Clay will face Jesuit (Tampa) in the 5A state championship game today, May 22nd at 4:00 PM at Jet Blue Park.
