Chivers Goes CG in 4-2 Win For Jupiter

By Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

In a 9a regional quarter matchup that saw two teams loaded with division one talent in Park Vista and Jupiter,  it would be two uncommitted underclassmen that would be responsible for three of the four runs in Jupiter's 4-2 win.

Park Vista would send to the mound one of the fastest risers in the 2017 class in Miami commit James Marinan. Marinan, currently ranked No. 9 in Florida and No 47 in the newly released Draft 100, showed why he has shot up the board early. During the fall, Marinan mostly sat in the 87-90 mph range with his fastball and showed feel for average secondary pitches. In the first though, Marinan would work 92-95 touching 96 mph with little effort from a ¾ slot. He is listed at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds and is every bit of that. He has long legs and lands consistently in line, especially from the windup. He did rush at times in the stretch and saw the velocity drop a bit to 91-93. He also featured a slider that had quality shape with late action when he got extension at 75-80 mph. He also showed a feel for a changeup that he threw to both right and left-handed hitters at 82-85 mph. Overall, he has a strong frame with a clean arm action and offspeed that projects to be at least average.

Jupiter would battle to get three runs in the second thanks in big part to a two RBI triple from 2018 Dakota Gaillard followed by an RBI single from Noah Otero-Vargus. Marinan would settle in to the 91-93 mph range with his fastball, going 5+ allowing four runs on three hits and strike out three.

Park Vista would battle back for two runs in the sixth thanks to RBIs from Steven Smith and James Marinan, but Zach Chivers would shut the door. Chivers would go the complete game, allowing two runs and scattering three hits in the winning effort.
