FL 2017 Draft Spotlight: RHP Harrison Francis

By Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

Chipola recruit. Francis has always had an athletic and projectable frame with a quick arm behind some effort in his delivery. He has previously shown an above average changeup, but the velocity on the fastball sat in the 87-89 mph rang. His fastball early this spring has worked in the 89-92 range touching 93 mph. Though he struggled a bit with command early, the fastball showed arm side life with some effort. He also featured a plus changeup at 81-82 mph that he threw to both right and left handed hitters with great arm speed and depth to the pitch which he would use for five of his nine strikeouts. He would also mix in a 74-77 mph slider. There is definitely some effort in the delivery, but he has late life on the fastball with still room to fill out and gain some velocity. The improved slider and changeup make him very even more intriguing than before.

Scouting Report

03/15/17- Francis gave up four runs in the first three innings, but would settle in and go five innings while striking out nine and only allowing four hits. His fastball worked in the 89-92 range touching 93 mph throughout the night.

10/16/16- Chipola recruit. The 6-foot-2, 197 pound right handed pitcher has a strong and lean lower half with a clean ¾ arm action. The fastball worked from 85-88 mph and came out of the hand well, looking like it should jump in velocity. The slider has as a sweeping action at 74 mph. He is projectable with a quick arm that has some effort. The fastball has life and will make a jump in velocity and will be interesting as the slider continues to progress.

7/13/15: 6-foot-1 180 pounds with a lean, athletic, and projectable body. Simple and repeatable delivery. Good lower half and could maybe get a little more extension. Everything stays in line. Fairly loose arm with a high ¾ slot. Some effort in his delivery but it is still loose. 84-87 mph FB. 74-75 mph CHG that he throws for strikes with the same arm speed and has late dive.
