As the baseball season draws closer USA Baseball released its Golden Spikes Award Watch List, which names the nations top amateur player. The only high school player named to the list was Lake Mary High School SS Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers looks to join current Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper and retired 10-year MLB veteran Alex Fernandez as the only non-NCAA Division I winners. He would become the first High School player to win the prestigious award.  Rodgers has been near the top of 2015 draft boards after impressing on the showcase circuit over the past few years.

Recently PBR Florida Director Rob Sidwell was able to see Rodgers in a preseason game at Lake Mary High School, and here is his scouting report.

2/2/15-Looked very smooth in the field with loose easy actions and softness in his hands. Showed an above avg arm and made a nice bare handed play that he had to charge and field on the run showing very good body control. Took a great BP with power to all fields. Electric hands with easy power. First at bat of the season looked a bit anxious after chasing a FB up out of the zone but settled in and in his 4th at bat, he gave the scouts what they came to see. He hit a monster blast towering over just left of the center field wall. Ended the day 1-4 with a HR.

Loose athletic projectable strong body with some width to his back. Loose quick bat with explosive bat speed and easy power. Plus ML power with a plus bat. Ability to hit for avg and power. Does it easy. Excellent hand eye with a good path. Very confident hitter. Has matured a lot at the plate. Advanced approach with good hitting instincts. Bat is best tool but has very good actions at SS with an avg to above avg ML arm. Good hands with avg type range. Is an offensive SS now but could outgrow the position and become an offensive 3B in the big leagues. Also ran a 6.85, 60. First round type talent in 2015 draft.

The Golden Spikes Award winner will be announced on June 23rd in Los Angeles.
