Scouting notes from the CFBL

By Rob Sidwell
Florida Scouting Director

Winter Park, Fl --- The CFBL is a Fall developmental league for High School teams in the Central Florida area. It’s a chance for younger players to get live reps against other teams and for players to make an impression in front of their High School coach to set the tone for the Spring. Today we take a look at some highlights from the Winter Park vs Wekiva HS game.

Mike Brown C Wekiva HS 2016
Uncommitted Senior. 5-foot-10, 175 pound catcher with a lean athletic body on a medium sized frame. Good catch and throw guy with strong accurate throws to second base. Threw 2 guys out trying to steal. Solid receiver with good mobility. Blocks well. Hustles. Simple approach at the plate with good hand eye. Contact type hitter. Singles type guy.

Jacob Wakefield OF Wekiva HS 2017
6-foot, 175 pound outfielder with a loose lean live athletic projectable body. Has a good gate under way. Ran 4.26 and a 4.34 to 1B from the right side. Has quickness in the bat with a somewhat crude approach. Strength and power will come with physical maturity.

Zack Combs RHP Wekiva HS 2016
Uncommitted Senior. 5-foot-10, 150 pound right hander with a lean loose body on a medium sized frame. Loose arm at a high ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Fast ball was 70-72 mph. Did not see any secondary stuff.

Elijah Cabell OF Winter Park HS 2018
6-foot-1, 180 pound outfielder with a live athletic strong young body. Is really put together for such a young guy. Good instincts in OF with plenty of range and advanced arm strength. Throws have good carry. Very good bat speed with good strength and power. Will have big future power. Average ML power now. Good load with aggressive approach. Has a bit of a double hitch but is usually on time. Ball really jumps of his bat. Has a chance to become a 2018 draft. Smoked a double to deep left center field, stolen base, laid out for a diving catch in the outfield.

Tucker Marillia OF Winter Park HS 2019
5-foot-8, 160 pound outfielder with a stocky compact strong quick body. Shows good first step quickness on the bases and in the OF. Throws had good carry. Has strength and quickness in the bat with an aggressive approach. Good bat path. Barrel stays in the zone. Strength and quickness in this young body. Shows raw power already. Smoked a line drive single to left field for 2 RBI’s.

Alex Wiederhold RHP Faith Christian Academy 2017
6-foot-2, 180 pound right hander with a loose lean athletic projectable body. Loose live easy working arm with more velocity to come. Short in the back with a compact fluid delivery. Hides ball in back. Lands in line. Occasionally pulls off line. Fast ball is 86-89 mph with riding action down in the zone. Very effective down in the zone. Curve ball has ¾ rotation at 65-66 mph. Change up was 65 mph and is a work in progress. Slowed down to throw it. Very good young arm. Secondary stuff is a work in progress.  Overall stuff will continue to get better with physical maturity.
