In the championship game of the Sarasota Baseball Classic, Venice carried their momentum from the semi-finals to come away with a big win over Braden River 13-3. The Indians got a quality start from 2016 RHP/1B Rylee Buckmaster who went 3 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run and struck out three. Offensively, everyone contributed including 2016 INF and Jacksonville commit Scott Dubrule who was 3-3 with an RBI, 2016 C Jake Grubbs who was 2-2 with walk, double, and RBI, and 2017 INF and UCF commit Shane Shifflet who was 3-3 with a double and two RBI’s.

The action got started quickly when the second batter of the game for Braden River, 2016 INF Brian Dillingham, hit a deep solo home run to left to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. That lead, however, was short lived as Venice scored two in the bottom of the first; one run off a Grubbs single. After a scoreless top of the second, the Indians put up four runs including a two-RBI double from Shifflet to left-center field.

By the fifth inning, the Pirates were able to chip away to make it a 6-3 deficit. Unfortunately for them, Venice put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The runs were scored off a chain of hits, errors, and hit by pitches and the inning sealed the victory for Venice 13-3.
