Prep Baseball Report's IA Top Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, August 7, 2016. The event was held at Duane Banks Field; on the campus of the University of Iowa. The event featured many of the top 2017 prospects from Iowa who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and the University of Iowa coaching staff.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Top Prospect Games.

catching Prospects

Carson Behrens, C, Davenport North, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Tall stance, pre-set load and hands, hitchy leg kick trigger, long stride into contact, avg. balance in swing, works middle of field, line drive and ground ball contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Clean exchange, steps away from target, opens front side early, throws all arm, avg. carry and accuracy. 70 mph arm strength with 2.09-2.16 pop times. Solid setup behind plate, needs to work on thumb underneath baseball to receive, raw mechanically, is athletic enough to improve with instruction.

Joseph Boehler, C, Saydel, 2017
5-foot-8, 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Slight rhythm, pre-set hands, stays connected, short to contact, solid barrel control, line drive contact, uses whole field, 86 mph exit velocity. Clean exchange with quick release, front side flies open, effects carry and accuracy, lower release point, 75 mph arm strength with 2.02-2.13 pop times. Avg./solid receiver, handles across body well, avg. blocker, low stance with runners on base. Decent overall athleticism behind plate.

Derek Hackman, C, Johnston, 2017
6-foot, 195-pound left-handed hitting catcher. Balanced stance, easy load and stride, quiet head, long through zone, shows solid pop in bat, ability to use whole field, 89 mph exit velocity. Shows above avg. arm strength and carry to bag with accuracy, solid direction with feet, stays down and through on throws, 76 mph arm with 2.00-2.12 pop times. Quiet receiver with good flexibility behind dish, blocks well, good mobility for size.

Nick Hagen, C, Burlington, 2017
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Quiet rhythm, quiet head, explodes through contact, good weight transfer, stays gap to gap, hard line drive and fly ball contact, 86 mph exit velocity. Works around the plate, clean transfer, keeps front side on target, solid carry, good accuracy- keeps throws down, 72 mph arm strength with 1.97-2.1 pop times. Receiving skills have improved, quiet behind plate, good mobility, solid blocker with quickness, occasional low set-up with runners on base.

Ryan Morrissey, C, Pleasant Valley, 2017
5-foot-10, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Strong setup in box, slightly closed stance, easy body load with leg kick trigger, stays on and through contact, hard line drive contact to middle of field, 91 mph exit velocity. Clean exchanges, good direction, uses strong lower half, stays down and through on throws, solid accuracy to bag, 76 mph arm strength with 1.92-2.03 pop times. Avg. receiver, new to position, glove-hand is stiff at times, needs to improve mobility and quickness, should continue to develop at position. Above avg. bat in IA 2017 class.

Kade Overton, C/RHP, ADM, 2017
6-foot, 205-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Crouched stance, body load, stands up to swing, extra head movement, below avg. contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Steps into batters box, flies open with front side, quick release, inconsistent accuracy to bag, 77 mph arm strength with 2.03-2.12 pop times. Narrow feet in setup, rigid glove, avg. lateral mobility.

Reed Pegram, C/RHP, Ankeny Centennial, 2017
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Lean athletic build with good flexibility. Open stance, strides across body, fights high back elbow occasionally, loose easy actions in box with rhythm, works middle of field, 82 mph exit velocity. Good feet and direction, clean exchange, short repeatable arm action, quick release, 77 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.16 pop times. Soft hands behind plate, needs to improve strength to stick pitches, occasional high glove setup, shows good lateral movement and mobility.

Treye Rinehart, C, Centerville, 2017
5-foot-11, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Tall stance, strides inline to pitcher, uphill path, barrel is out and around at contact, stiff legs in swing, pull approach with flashes of pop in bat, 87 mph exit velocity. Length to exchange, down and around, quick release, avg. carry and accuracy, 74 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.18 pop times. Flexible setup behind plate, high glove target, extra movement with body receiving, has strong hands to stick pitch.

Connor Schultz, RHP/C, Cedar Falls, 2017
6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall stance, pre-set load, knee to knee trigger, high back elbow setup, falls over plate at contact, flashes pop in bat when he gets extended, 86 mph exit velocity. Solid flexibility behind plate, clean exchanges, slides around plate with feet, long arm action and release, above avg. arm strength, 80 mph arm strength with 1.99-2.13 pop times. Solid receiver to glove side, extra movement as pitching is coming, lacks secondary position with runners on base.

Tyler Stoltze, C, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Tall stance, easy load, drags back half through zone, clean bat path, avg. bat speed, spray contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Quick exchange, longer release, stands up to throw, loses lower half power, 76 mph arm strength with 2.13-2.28 pop times. Shows soft hands behind plate, avg. receiver and blocker, needs better secondary position with runners on base.

Nate Stolze, C, Urbandale, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Well above avg. skill-set at position, above avg. in all areas, quick transfer and release, accurate and online to bag, 80 mph arm strength with 1.82-1.92 pop times, good mobility behind the plate, receives well with soft hands and strength to stick pitches. High hand setup, high back elbow creates length to contact, leg kick trigger into wide base, solid present strength, consistent solid contact, mid/pull approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Will make big jump in IA 2017 rankings.

Cody Veach, C, Dowling Catholic, 2017
6-foot-1, 220-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Strong build, balanced stance, slight shoulder load, short leg kick trigger into stride, minimal weight transfer through contact, spins with lower half, short through zone, 89 mph exit velocity. Steps into batters box, low setup to throw, longer exchange, quicker release, low arm slot, 74 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.28 pop times. Low flexible setup to receive, lacks mobility, receives with straight arm creating rigid glove.

Jordan Wendel, C, Alta-Aurelia, 2017
6-foot-1, 210-pound left-handed hitting catcher. Easy active load, leg kick trigger, out front at contact, flashes pop in bat, showed ability to drive baseball to oppo gap, 89 mph exit velocity. 83 mph arm strength with 1.94-2.03 pop times. Has above avg. flexibility behind plate, receives with soft hands, quick transfer and release, drives baseball downhill with carry and accuracy to bag. Shows lateral mobility, gets glove down first to block, and has quick feet to back pick during game action.
