Prep Baseball Report's IA Top Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, August 7, 2016. The event was held at Duane Banks Field; on the campus of the University of Iowa. The event featured many of the top 2017 prospects from Iowa who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and the University of Iowa coaching staff.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Top Prospect Games.

outfield Prospects

Dillon Africa, OF, Iowa City, 2017
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Physical athletic frame. Tall stance with spread base, short leg kick trigger, short path through zone, strength in swing, lacks extension, still hits balls to warning track, could make big jumps with offensive development, 90 mph exit velocity. Shows avg. actions in outfield, long release from OT slot, fields with 2 hands, solid accuracy to target, shows ability to track fly balls, 84 mph arm strength. 

Anthony Alepra, RHP/OF, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2017
6-foot-3, 177-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 88 mph exit velocity. Northwestern University commit. Low hand slot with leg kick trigger, off-time at event, flashes pop in bat to oppo gap when extended.

Gregory Bennett, SS/OF, Western Dubuque, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting infielder/outfielder. Athletic build with present strength. Upright posture with open stance, easy stride to square, head is level and quiet, occasional stiff path with high back elbow, stays on and through contact, mid/pull approach, hard line drive and fly ball contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Solid actions in outfield, plays through ball, soft glove, with above avg. carry and accuracy to target, online throws with 92 mph arm strength from outfield.

Ben Beutel, LHP/OF, Davenport North, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 84 mph exit velocity. Crouched stance, open start, strides to square, works top half of baseball, stiff path to contact occasionally, line drive and ground ball contact, mid/pull approach. Clean glove action, works through ball, front side stays on target, ¾ arm slot, solid carry and accuracy on throws, 89 mph arm strength from outfield.

Justus Burke, OF, Davenport Assumption, 2017
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Has cleaner mechanics with improved body control, strength in bat path, stays on and through, gap to gap approach, aggressive to contact, hard line drive and fly ball contact, 92 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions and attacks baseball in outfield, clean glove actions, short arm action with quicker release, above avg. accuracy to target, online throws, 85 mph arm strength from outfield.

Keaton Candor, OF, Lemars, 2017
5-foot-10, 188-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Tall open stance with simple setup, deeper load, strong enough to barrel through zone, occasional early exit from zone with barrel, stays on at contact, drives balls to gaps with strength, 92 mph exit velocity. Good direction and angles, heavier feet, long arm action, OT slot, avg. carry with above avg. accuracy. Shows ability to track fly balls. Present run tool, strong, playable arm, and power in bat- projects as left-fielder in college. 85 mph arm strength.

Cooper Davis, LHP/OF, Lemars Gehlen, 2017
6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Pre-set load, some hand rhythm, front foot contact, simple swing, singles power, works middle of field with slashy line drive swing, 74 mph exit velocity. Average glove and feet, long release on throws from OT slot, elevated to plate, avg. accuracy, 76 mph arm strength.

Ethan Hayes, OF, Cedar Falls, 2017
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Square stance, body load with active hands, heavy leg kick trigger, extra movement with head and eyes, aggressive swinger, mid/pull approach, hard line drive and fly ball contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid actions in outfield, clean glove action, extra step on throws, compact arm circle, quicker release, accurate to target with above avg. arm strength, 89 mph arm strength from outfield.

Ross Hingst, LHP/OF, Waukee, 2017
5-foot-8, 172-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Open stance, strides to square, compact swing, easy path to baseball, mid/pull approach, solid line drive and fly ball contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Solid actions in OF, sits back on baseball occasionally, clean arm action with quick release, accurate arm and throws through target well, 83 mph arm strength from outfield.

Kirby Kerr, OF, Linn Mar, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Square stance, minimal stride, leans over plate at contact, flat line drive swing plane, stiff finish, pull approach, flashes of pop in bat, 87 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action, avg. defensive actions, sits back on baseball, no momentum through baseball- stops to throw, avg. accuracy to target, 83 mph arm strength.

Kyle Kliever, OF, Lemars, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Crouched stance with wide start, leg kick trigger, rotational bat path through zone- exit early, hook contact, pull approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Fields off right foot effecting direction and balance, avg. momentum through baseball, stays on top of throws, online with accuracy to target, 81 mph arm strength from outfield. 

Jack Koerner, OF, Dowling Catholic, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Athletic frame with present strength. Dual sport football/baseball player, tall setup, collapses into launch position, clean bat path, loud contact, mid/pull approach, 92 mph exit velocity. Tracks ball well in outfield, fields out front, slightly stiff arm action, accurate to target, 83 mph arm strength. Very good athlete, explosive actions, raw mechanics, should make serious jumps once dedicated to baseball everyday. 

Kade Kolarik, LHP/OF, Indianola, 2017
5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Pre-set hands, double tap trigger to swing, short path through zone, stiff path to contact, uses whole field, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid direction on throws, fields cleanly, plays through ball well, longer arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 84 mph from the outfield.

Peyton Krugler, OF, Dowling Catholic, 2017
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Strong compact frame, narrow base, hitchy leg kick trigger disrupts timing, short to contact, out front at this event, flashes above avg. pop in bat, pull approach, 90 mph exit velocity. Solid actions with usable glove, fields deep occasionally in tall stance, clean arm action, accurate arm with carry to target, 86 mph arm strength.

Colin Lacey, LHP/OF, Dowling Catholic, 2017
5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Small frame with athleticism, body load, short to to contact, leans over plate occasionally, slashy swing plane, solid contact, mid/pull approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Plays fast in field with above avg. athletic actions, above avg. momentum through baseball, long clean arm action, quick release with accuracy, 88 mph arm strength.

Steven Lawrence, OF, Gilbert, 2017
5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 4.21 runner from right-side. Still hands, easy stride, stiff lower half, short to contact, line drive swing plane, 79 mph exit velocity. Quick twitch athlete, attacks baseball, soft glove actions, fields out front, quick release, ball comes out of hand well, accurate arm, 87 mph arm strength.

Jackson Little, OF, Waverly-Shell Rock, 2017
6-foot, 150-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Tall stance, narrow base, long stride into contact, negative weight at contact, out and around path, pull approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, fields on side of body, limited use of front side on throws, sinking action on throws, 67 mph arm strength. 

Ryan Loy, OF, Washington, 2017
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Tall open stance, strides to square, no use of lower half in swing, slight uphill path to contact, mid/pull approach, 87 mph exit velocity. Slow actions in outfield, stiff glove, short arm action with quick release, 77 mph arm strength from outfield.

Robbie McCargar, OF, Dowling Catholic, 2017
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Compact physical frame, flashes above avg. power in bat, pull approach, hard top spin line drives and ground balls, 89 mph exit velocity. Good routes and angles, fields deep on side of body occasionally, limited use of front side, stiffer arm action, solid accuracy, 70 mph arm strength.

Will Rodruck, RHP/OF, WDM Valley, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall open stance, strides to square with double tap, easy load with clean bath path through zone, good bat speed, stays on and through contact, works middle of field well, 86 mph exit velocity. Good angles, works through baseball, fields on side at times, above avg. carry and accuracy on throws, 85 mph arm strength.

Bryce Simon, OF, Cascade, 2017
6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Lean loose athletic build. Spread stance, front heel turn trigger, stays connected, short to contact, minor extra movement with eyes and head to contact, mid/pull approach, solid line drive and ground ball contact, 86 mph exit velocity. Above avg. actions in field, plays through ball, fields on side occasionally, above avg. arm action, loose with hand quickness, carry to target with accuracy, 89 mph arm strength.

Logan Sims, OF, Iowa City West, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Lean athletic build with some present strength. Square stance, double tap trigger, straight legs in swing, rotational bat path, gap to gap approach with hard contact through four-hole, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid actions in field with decent glove and feet, varying arm action, throws have carry and accuracy to target, 82 mph arm strength.
