Name: Cade Schares
Position: C/UTL
Class: 2016
Height/Weight: 6-foot, 180-pounds
High School: Don Bosco
PBR Rank: #73 in IA 2016 Class

PBR: Why did you choose North Iowa Area CC?
SCHARES: I knew I wanted to give JUCO a try, mainly because it would help me financially as well as helping me develop my skills. I want to see if I can play at a D1 or D2 school, and I knew NIACC would give me the best chance of doing that. The new dorms were pretty awesome too.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
SCHARES: I was considering Wartburg very closely. Ellsworth CC and Grand View were also possibilities.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
SCHARES: I think they first saw me at the state baseball tournament my sophomore year. After that they saw me at some showcases here and there. It's kinda funny because when they were first contacted about recruiting me last season, they thought I was graduating in 2015 so they said they wouldn't have a place for me. So I just checked them off the list and tried looking for other schools. But then they called me later this year and explained to me that there was a misunderstanding and that they actually were interested in me. It was very easy to speak with Coach Lauritson and Coach Hergert. They are really good guys and they made the recruiting process simple for me.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
SCHARES: Yea definitely. I'm a pretty indecisive guy so once I made the decision a big weight was lifted off my shoulders. Now I just need to focus on improving myself for the upcoming high school season and for NIACC.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
SCHARES: NIACC is one of the best JUCO programs in Iowa for developing players to play at the next level and they win at the same time. When I got the chance to go and play there I couldn't pass it up.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
SCHARES: I'd say my dad has definitely been the biggest help. He has been coaching me for as long as I can remember and he's always willing to practice with me and do whatever it takes to help. He's very selfless and he's a big part of my baseball success. We've spent a lot of time at the baseball field together, and I'll never forget that.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
SCHARES: To be honest I really didn't know a thing about the recruiting process so I just went with the flow and learned as I went. I'd say it was pretty simple though. You have to find a way to show the scouts your skills and if they think you're good enough, you'll get an offer.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
SCHARES: I need to get quicker and stronger. They are going to help me improve my skills. I know that I won't have a starting spot handed to me. I need to go in and earn it.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
SCHARES: I'd have to say the state semi-final game against Newman my sophomore year.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
SCHARES: I've played against a lot of the top players in the state, so I can't specifically point one out. There's too many to choose from.
