NEW LENOX, IL – Providence did what it usually does come playoff time, coming up with another come from behind victory to take the 4A New Lenox Sectional Championship 4-1 over Lincoln-Way North.

Trailing 1-0 heading to the top of the seventh Jackson Dvorak started the rally with a leadoff single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zack Pych. Matt Waznis popped up the first pitch he saw in foul territory, but the third baseman was unable to make the catch. Waznis made the most of it by driving a double to left field to tie the game at one. Tom Kelley then worked a walk to put runners at the corners. Lincoln-Way North went to the pen and brought in Mitch Hunter. Hunter’s first pitch went to the backstop to score Waznis and give the Celtics the lead.

After a groundout, pinch hitter Drew Hunniford delivered an RBI single to score Kelley. Leadoff man Kevin Fitzgerald finished off the scoring with an RBI single to give the Celtics the 4-1 lead.

Reliever Noah O’Brien, who came in in the sixth, got the final three outs to pick up the victory and send Providence to the Super Sectional.

Lincoln-Way North looked like they had the two time defending 4A State Champions in the bottom of the sixth. Tom Szczansy worked a walk to start the inning. Pinch runner Sean Robinson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Figus. After a groundout and intentional walk, pinch hitter James Quinn stepped to the plate. Quinn delivered an RBI single to score Robinson and give the Phoenix the first run of the game.

Unfortunately this game brings an end to the Lincoln-Way North program and school. The school will be closing and consolidating with the other Lincoln-Way’s next year.
