CHICAGO, IL – In the 4A St. Rita Sectional Semifinal St. Laurence came away with a 9-5 victory over Mount Carmel.

St. Laurence got on the board in the bottom of the first all with two outs. Tommy Farrell singled to lead off the inning, and after a sac bunt and a strikeout, Jimmy Burnette and Jack Cavanaugh worked walks to load the bases. With the bags loaded, designated hitter Jake Diaz came to the plate. On a lollipop throw back to the mound, Farrell broke for home and came away with a steal of home for the first run of the game. Diaz then delivered a two run single to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead that they never relinquished.

In the bottom of the second the Vikings plated two more runs on a two run single by Anthony Rios, to push the lead to 5-0.

Mount Carmel broke through in the fourth when Bobby Seymour singled to start the inning and came around to score on an RBI single by Neil Novosel. In the top of the sixth Novosel again drove in Seymour, who singled to start the inning, on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

The Vikings opened the game up in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring four times to make it 9-2. Jimmy Burnette delivered the big hit with a two run single.

Mount Carmel came back with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh but it would not be enough. Zion Pettigrew finished the day going 3-4 with a double and an RBI for the Caravan.

Angel Sandoval picked up the win for St. Laurence working six plus innings.

St. Laurence advances to take on Brother Rice Saturday morning for the Sectional Championship.
