Batavia 6, Marmion 3

GENEVA, IL – Junior, right-handed pitcher Glenn Albanese, continued to raise his stock, twirling a complete game, leading Batavia to a 6-3 victory over Marmion. Albanese, a Louisville recruit, walked one and struck out five in his seven innings of work. Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, the home of the Kane County Cougars, was the neutral site for the Tuesday afternoon contest.

Albanese, one of the top overall prospects at the Preseason All-State Showcase this past winter, impressed once again on Tuesday. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound, durable right-hander, pounded the strike zone and challenged hitters with his fastball throughout. Early on his fastball sat 88-90 mph with late life, tilt and some arm-side-run. From the third inning on his fastball ranged between 85-89 mph. Albanese maintained his velocity out of the stretch, while still being quick to the plate, 1.10-1.20 to home. To keep hitters honest, Albanese mixed in a curveball, showing good feel, 11/5 shape and clocked at 71-74 mph. He went seven innings, getting the win, allowing 5 hits, three unearned runs, struck out five and walked one.

The Batavia Bulldogs (9-5) did all of their scoring in the second and third innings. Jared Martin and Jimmy Roach delivered consecutive RBI singles in a two-run second inning for the Bulldogs.

In the third inning, the Bulldogs broke the game open, when six of the first seven batters delivered base hits. Albanese helped his cause on the mound delivering an RBI single and Andrew Costigan came through with an RBI double in the frame.

Marmion scratched a run across in the fourth and got two in the fifth to get back into the game. In the fifth, Trevor Taus singled and scored while Will Matthews added an RBI groundout to cut the lead to three.

Left-handed pitcher Nick Brummel came out of the bullpen for Marmion and kept the Bulldog offense at bay for the final four innings. Brummel went four and 1/3 innings, allowing one hit, no runs and struck out two.

More in-depth player notes will be posted in the Illinois Scout Blog later.
