CLASS 2A SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS

TEUTOPOLIS

Shelbyville 3 No. 6 Harrisburg 2
Shelbyville (24-3) stunned No. 6 Harrisburg (30-5) in eight exciting innings on Wednesday night. It was the third consecutive year that Harrisburg has had its season concluded in the sectional semifinals. Shelbyville’s Nate Standerfer singled home the eventual game-winner in the top of the eighth and Ram winning pitcher Andy Hawkins slammed the door on the Bulldogs after escaping a bases-loaded, no-out Harrisburg bottom of the seventh.

No. 9 Teutopolis 10, Flora 0
The Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis (26-3) scored seven runs in the top of the seventh and RHP Jared Waldhoff slammed the door on the Wolves in the bottom of the fifth to put an early-ending to this game. Waldhoff fired a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Waldhoff helped himself with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Red-Hot junior Bobby Wenthe went deep again and drove home two T-Town runs. Reid Hardiek was 2-for-2 with a double three runs scored and two RBI. Cody Will chipped in with a single and two RBI.

NASHVILLE

DuQuoin 2, Murphysboro 1
DuQuoin (25-8) trailed Murphysboro 1-0 with two on, two outs and two strikes on Indian number nine hitter senior Jason O’Rourke in the top of the seventh. O’Rourke, a .242 hitter with just four RBI on the season, ripped a clutch two-out, two RBI double to lead the Indians to victory. Indian junior Camdon Mercier went the distance for DuQuoin to improve to 7-2 on the season.

PLEASANT PLAINS

Piasa Southwest 1, Carlinville 0
The Piasa Birds of Piasa Southwestern (23-6) won a thriller in nine innings on Wednesday. Senior Hunter Thompson ripped a double that plated senior 2B Nick Parrino with the walk-off winner in the bottom of the ninth, which sent the large contingent of Piasa Bird fans into orbit. Parrino picked up the win on the mound to improve to 9-2 for the ‘Birds.

Pleasant Plains 6 Williamsville 2
Pleasant Plains (25-9) rolled past the Bullets behind senior LHP Ben Sprague (8-2), who went the distance with six strikeouts. Cardinal senior Danny Hayes led the Plains attack with a single and three RBI. Sprague helped himself with a single and an RBI. Sangamo Conference champion Williamsville bows out at 22-6.  

BYRON

Oregon 7 Erie Prophetstown 1
Oregon (16-16) rolled past E-P behind Hawk LHP Matt Murray, who fired a seven-hitter with six strikeouts for his third play-off victory of the season for the surging Hawks.

Byron 10, Aurora Central Catholic 3
Byron (22-9) crushed ACC to create an all-Big Northern West Regional Final in Byron on Saturday at 11. The Tigers were led by their 6-foot-5 junior 1B Dan Lowe. Lowe had three hits and plated four Tiger runs.  Junior Nate Peterson improved to 9-2 on the season with a complete-game gem. Peterson tied a Byron school record for most wins in a single season. Aurora Central Catholic bows out at 27-8.

CLASS 4A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

NORMAL

No. 1 Normal West 3, Rock Island 0
Normal West (32-3) won for the 27th consecutive time, blanking Rock Island behind senior RHP Nick Hieb (11-0). Hieb fired a three-hit shutout at the Rocks and set a new single-season mark for victories with his 11th win of the campaign. Hieb struck out six and walked one. The shutout was the 13th for the top-ranked Wildcats in 2013.

Hieb’s batterymate, Western Illinois-bound C Adam McGinnis, took care of the ‘Cat offense with a perfect 3-for-3 day with a pair of RBI. McGinnis is now hitting a team-leading .495 for West. Red-hot junior Ryan Frye had a single and an RBI while Missouri State-bound Alex Jefferson was 2-for-2 with a double and scored twice for the Big 12 Conference champions.

FENWICK

No. 2 St. Laurence 6, Washington 0
St. Laurence (26-9) rolled behind Purdue-recruit RHP Mike Kornacker, who fired a one-hit shutout at the Patriots. Kornacker, who already has thrown two perfect games this season, improved to 7-1 on the season. Kornacker struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Kornacker helped himself at the plate with a solo-blast in the bottom of the fifth. Viking leadoffman Brad Wood doubled and plated a pair of runs while junior 2B Nate Tholl chipped in with a single and an RBI.

MOUNT CARMEL

No. 3 Mount Carmel 11, Kelly 1
Mount Carmel (28-8) blasted Kelly in six innings behind University of Oregon-bound SS Jerry Houston and sophomore RF Josh Stowers. Stowers was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, with three Caravan RBI while the future-Duck Houston had two singles, a double and plated three more Caravan runs. Senior Jason Gasser chipped in with a double and an RBI. Caravan starting and winning LHP Richard Fordon allowed one run in his four innings of work to improve to 5-3 on the season.

SANDBURG

Stagg 4 No. 20 Sandburg 2
Stagg (18-18) stunned district-rival Sandburg (22-10) behind a five-hit masterpiece from junior RHP Max Struss. Struss struck out six and walked one. Red-hot Steve Kubiak, Mike Rankin and Nick Nowak all had two hits and an RBI for the victorious Chargers.

EDWARDSVILLE

Edwardsville 1, Quincy 0
Edwardsville (27-9) squeaked past the Blue Devils behind senior RHP Cole Hagen and junior Alex Meyers. Hagen (7-1) fired a one-hit shutout at Quincy and Meyers picked a great time to blast his first round-tripper of the year when he homered in the sixth.

O’FALLON

Granite City 7 O’Fallon 5
Granite City’s (16-20) junior C Chad Spanberger hammered his fifth home run of the season with the bases full in the top of the seventh to stun O’Fallon (23-13) on Wednesday. Spanberger had earlier plated a Warrior run with a single. Senior Jordan Askins (2-4) fired 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief to pick up the win for Granite City.   

NAPERVILLE CENTRAL

No. 11 Naperville Central 7, West Aurora 0
Naperville Central (24-7) rolled past West Aurora behind Butler University-bound Jeff Schank. Schank improved to 7-1 on the mound allowing no runs and just four hits in his stellar innings of work. Blake Butler gave Schank all the run-support he would need with a bomb a single and two RBI.

Barrington (22-11) Cary-Grove (20-10

DEKALB

No. 15 Huntley 10, Elgin Larkin 2
Huntley (25-6) crushed Larkin behind University of Illinois-recruit junior Mike Skonieczny. The future Fighting Illini fell a homer shy of hitting for the cycle and plated three Red Raider runs. University of Nebraska-bound RHP Bryce Only (4-3) allowed two runs and six hits in his solid six innings of work on the mound to pick up the win. Only fanned eight Royal batsmen and helped himself at the plate with a single, triple and two RBI. Tommy Kiriakopoulus continued his torrid hitting with two hits including a double and two RBI.  

MCHENRY

McHenry 1, Grant 0
Red-Hot McHenry (23-14) blanked the Bulldogs behind a four-hit shutout gem by Warrior RHP Mike Reisinger. Reisinger fanned five and walked two to improve to 4-3 on the season. Jack Glosson, who had a pair of singles in the game, singled home the eventual game-winner for McHenry in the fourth. Junior Cody Freund chipped in with a pair of hits for the Warriors.   

SCHAUMBURG

Lake Park 5, Schaumburg 3
Lake Park (26-10) rallied past Schaumburg scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth to erase 3-1 Saxon lead. Junior Anthony Galina had a single and two RBI to lead the Upstate 8 Conference Valley Division champions to victory. Senior Christian Taugner allowed a run in his five outstanding innings of relief to improve to 9-1 on the season. Taugner also singled and plated a Lancer run.

CLASS 3A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

GENESEO

No. 13 Rock Island Alleman 7, Dunlap 1
Rock Island Alleman (26-3) romped past Dunlap behind senior LHP Taner Ledezma (7-1). Ledezma went the distance with nine punch-outs. Alleman was led at the plate by senior John Tracy, who had a clutch two-run double for the Pioneers.

Galesburg 2, Geneseo 1
Galesburg (27-9) won a nine-inning thriller over the host Maple Leafs on Wednesday. The Silver Streaks won in walk-off fashion when starting and winning pitcher Carson Cheesman danced home with the game-winner on a wild pitch for the Western Big 6 co-champions. Galesburg and co-Western Big Six Conference champion Rock Island Alleman will battle for the de-facto WB6 title and the Geneseo Regional Championship on Saturday at 1.  

MORTON

No. 14 Metamora 4, East Peoria 0
Metamora (29-4) rolled behind Redbird freshman Geremy Guerrero (8-0), who fired a one-hit shutout at EP. The Skender brothers led the Redbirds offensively on Wednesday. Junior Alec had two hits, including a double, and sophomore Ethan chipped in with a single and an RBI. David Gualandri had a single and plated the other Redbird run.  

CANTON

No. 23 Bartonville Limestone 8, Canton 3
Bartonville Limestone (25-8) rolled past Canton behind senior Zach Jewell, who had two hits and drove home three Rocket ruins. Rocket LHP Dylan Weaver allowed two runs in his fine 5 2/3 innings of work to pick up the win. Weaver (6-2) also had a fine day at the plate with a single and two RBI.

Peoria Notre Dame 1, Peoria Richwoods 0
Peoria Notre Dame’s (24-8) sophomore LHP Jake Hurst fired a no-hitter at the Knights on Wednesday to lead the Fighting Irish to their third win over Mid-State 6 arch rival Richwoods. Hurst fanned nine and walked one. PND’s super-soph Andy Shadid reached base on a dropped third strike, went to second on an error on the throw, and scored the lone run of the game on another Knight miscue in the bottom of the fourth.

Morris (24-6)

HERRIN

Mount Vernon 12, Herrin 1
Mount Vernon (27-8) crushed Herrin in five innings on Wednesday behind Ram junior ace RHP Brock Fulkerson (9-2). Fulkerson fired a five-hitter at the Tigers with six strikeouts. Landon Thomas singled doubled and plated three runs to lead the Ram attack. Sawyer Harrison continued his hot hitting with two singles and two RBI. Clayton Reeves and Colton Meador chipped in with two hits apiece and an RBI.

TROY-TRIAD

Highland 13, Bethalto Civic Memorial 3
Highland (26-9) hammered Civic Memorial behind the booming bat of Jake Haberer. Haberer singled and hammered his eighth round-tripper of the season to lead the Bulldogs into Saturday’s Regional Final. Haberer drove home RBI’s No. 46, 47 & 48 on the 2013 campaign. Zach Stieb had a double and plated three runs for the ‘Dogs while Nate Balkenbush tripled home three runs for Highland. RHP Grant Geppert fired a four-hitter to improve to 7-2 on the mound for the Bulldogs.

SHG

Chatham Glenwood 4, Springfield 3
Chatham Glenwood (20-8) slipped past Springfield 4-3 behind three scoreless innings of relief from junior Konnor Aherin. Aherin replaced Titan starting and winning pitcher junior Brian Hobbie with two Senator runners on with nobody out in the fifth. Aherin induced a double-play ball on which the third Senator run scored and then slammed the door on Springfield (20-16) the rest of the way. Aherin notched his second save of the season.

Chatham Glenwood will be looking for the Titans' 11th consecutive regional championship when they take on SHG (26-7) for the Sacred Heart-Griffin Regional Championship on Saturday at 11.Glenwood, the four-time Central State 8 Conference champ, shared the 2013 CS8 title with SH and Jacksonville. SHG defeated Jacksonville 3-0 in the night’s second game so Saturday’s affair also will be for the CS8 de-facto conference title.

No. 17 Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 3, Jacksonville 0
SHG (26-7) blanked Jacksonville (23-12) behind a four-hit shutout from Cyclone junior Nolan Etheridge. Etheridge improved to 8-2 on the season with his complete-game masterpiece. Cyclone junior 1B Nolan Aherin gave Etheridge the only run he would need with a sac-fly in the fourth.

In what served as a de-facto Central State 8 Conference semifinal between the CS8 tri-champion Cyclones and Crimson, SHG moves onto to meet archrival and fellow tri-champion Glenwood for the SHG Regional Championship. The two squads split their two-game CS8 series earlier in the year.

LINCOLN

Bloomington 6, Normal U-High 3
Bloomington (25-10) opened up a 6-0 lead on the Pioneers and hung on for a regional victory on Wednesday. Senior Jakob Scogin led the Purple Raider attack with a booming two-run blast in the second and then plated another run in the fifth. Sophomore LHP Charlie Cerney went the distance to improve to 7-1 on the season.

LEMONT

Joliet Catholic Academy 5, Oak Forest 1
Joliet Catholic Academy (19-14) spotted the Bengals a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, only to explode for five runs in the bottom of the third inning to roll past Oak Forest on Wednesday. Sophomore RHP Nick Dalesandro (5-2) fired a five-hitter with seven strikeouts at the Bengals. Junior Aaron Markley led the Hilltopper attack with a single and a pair of RBI. Western Illinois-bound SS Chris Tschida had a double and a RBI while Holy Cross-bound C Alex Voitik chipped in with a single and an RBI.

The Hilltoppers will take on the winner of today's game, No. 22 Lemont-Lincoln-Way West winner for the regional championship on Saturday morning at 11. Sean Duncan will be in Lemont today with all of the action.

BURLINGTON CENTRAL

Hampshire 4, Wheaton Academy 1
Hampshire (16-16) scored four runs in the fourth to blow past the Warriors on Wednesday. Junior Mike Merchut’s clutch two-run single in the fourth proved to be the game-winner. Senior RHP Mike Dumoulin (5-2) went the distance for the Whip-Purrs to pick up the win.
