NAPERVILLE, IL – In the Naperville sectional it was a battle of Downers Groves as No. 5 Downers Grove South took on Downers Grove North. North continued the trend of top ranked teams going down upsetting the Mustangs by a final of 8-0.

Senior right-hander Michael O’Malley was masterful for the Trojans tossing a complete game shutout allowing just four hits and striking out five. O’Malley recorded the last 15 outs of the game without allowing a hit, leaving the Mustangs with no hope in the end.

Downers Grove South’s best scoring chance came in the bottom half of the second when they loaded the bases to start off the inning with back to back singles by Matt Zinnecker and Alex Galik followed by a walk to Javier Martinez. With three chances to scratch a run across, O’Malley wiggled his way out of it with a strike out and back to back pop outs to leave the Mustangs scratching their heads, a complete momentum swing in the Trojans favor.

The Trojans would then come out in the top half of the third carrying their momentum to hang a three spot on starting pitcher Zach Burdi and the Mustangs. Connor Kopach and Troy Southard tallied hits in the inning with a big hit and run executed by Southard to tally an RBI.

The Trojans and Mustangs would trade zeros until the North’s top half of the seventh when they put all hopes for a Mustang comeback away. North would rally for five runs in the inning highlighted by a solo shot from Southard and a three run bomb by senior outfielder David Henson. Kopach also added an RBI single to finish the scoring.

Downers Grove North will now take on the winner of tomorrow’s Plainfield North Neuqua Valley contest to determine the Naperville Sectional Champion. The Sectional Championship game will be hel on Saturday June 1 at Neuqua Valley at 10 am.
