5th Annual Phil Lawler Summer State Classic Finals

NAPERVILLE- Defending IHSBCA/Phil Lawler State Champions Lyons Township began defense of its 2012 crown with a come-from-behind 9-5 win over Plainfield East (16-11) on Monday at North Central College in Naperville. Junior Charlie Harrigan's pinch-hit two-run double in the bottom of the fifth put the Lions up to stay 7-5. Junior John Heilenbach led the Lions with a two singles, a double and three RBI.

Lyons Township (24-6) will meet Minooka (14-5-1), which surprised St. Rita 3-1 behind a stellar pitching performance from Indian senior RHP Mitch Malone. Malone didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and finished with allowing a run and two hits in his 6 1/3 stellar innings of work to pick up the win. Senior RHP Trevor Maly nailed down the save for Malone by inducing a game-ending 4-6-3 DP.

In a loser's bracket elimination game, St. Rita (13-5) scored eight times in the top of the seventh and routed Plainfield East 11-3. Mustang junior Anthony Faron's bases-clearing double highlighted the Mustang eight-run explosion. Senior C Nate Soria had two hits in the inning and finished with three hits and a pair of RBI. St. Rita will play the loser of Tuesday's 10 am Lyons Township-Minooka game in a championship quarterfinal at 12:30 at Benedictine. Plainfield East, the first Plainfield school to advance to Summer State, bows out at 16-12.

 LISLE- Back on June 7 at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Libertyville and St. Charles East met in a Class 4A State Semifinal. Libertyville won 9-6 and went on to fall to Mount Carmel, 2-1 in the Class 4A State Championship Game on June 8 at Silver Cross. On Monday at Benedictine, 6-foot-4, 220 pound junior LHP Mitch Townsend pitched Libertyville past Huntley 3-1. Townsend fired a six-hitter at the Red Raiders, allowing one run and striking out nine.

On Tuesday at 3 at North Central College in Naperville, Libertyville will have a rematch with St. Charles East (19-12), who bombed Glenbrook North 15-5 in five innings. Fighting Saint junior Ben Rykoskey put an end to the proceedings driving home the fifteenth and final run of the game with his second hit and second RBI of the game.

In a game that ended a little after 11 p.m. at Benedictine on Monday night, Glenbrook North (17-7-1) outlasted Huntley 5-4, in 11 innings. Spartan senior Matt Alexander’s walk-off double plated junior Danny Ahern with the game-winner. Alexander was 4-for-4 with two RBI

The Spartans will meet the loser of the Libertyville-St. Charles in a championship quarterfinal at 5:30 on Tuesday at North Central.
