MORRIS, IL – The Morris Redskins (13-7, 4-3) defeated the Dekalb Barbs (6-8, 1-7) 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play.

Morris senior right handed pitcher Tim Smyk had a banner day on the mound and at the plate for the Redskins. Smyk fired six innings of six-hit, two-run baseball, striking out nine, and walking only one. Eight of Smyk’s nine strikeouts came on a snap-dragon curve that was working in his favor all day. At the plate Smyk finished 3-for-3 on the day with three singles and an RBI.

Redskins’ senior center fielder Austin Conrod, who came in hitting .438 on the year with 16 RBI, finished one-for-two with a single, hit-by-pitch, and two runs scored. Senior first basemen Grant Schultz capped off a four run first inning for the Redskins with a two-run homer to centerfield, after which the Redskins never trailed.

Junior third basemen Jake Kuykendall finished 2-for-3 with a home run for Dekalb, while junior first basemen Logan Haring finished 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the first. Josh Snead added two hits.

The Redskins and Barbs will play the rubber match of their three-game series at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Dave Pettengell Field in DeKalb.
