No. 41 Sandburg downs St. Charles East

ST. CHARLES, IL – It certainly isn’t one of the flashiest teams No. 41 Sandburg has had over the years, but the Eagles continue their winning ways. This time, Sandburg scrapped out a 5-2 nonconference victory over host St. Charles East on a frigid Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles (6-1) only tallied four hits in the victory, but thanks to three early errors by St. Charles East (2-2) and some well-executed small ball, they made all the runners count.

SS Jimmy Roche, who’s one of the top unsigned senior infielders in the state, led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base. The 6-foot, 170-pound athlete singled, stole second and scored on an error in the first inning, and also scored in the third as the Eagles mounted a 5-0 lead.

Junior CF Andy Gayton, the team’s leadoff hitter, was also an offensive spark, scoring two runs. In the Eagles’ three-run third he slashed on opposite-field double down the left-field line; he also was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Senior Ben Kociper also had a run-scoring single, and promising freshman 3B Branden Comia executed a suicide squeeze.

Meanwhile, junior left-handed Marco Babic yielded three hits and one run in three innings to earn the win. RHP Jake Tablerion pitched solidly in relief, allowing three hits and one run in 3.2 innings.

For St. Charles East, Max Powers delivered a triple in the fourth and scored on Jake Clodi’s single; Reid Olson doubled in the third and eventually scored.

More in-depth player notes will be posted in the Illinois Scout Blog later.
