No. 8 Plainfield North 3, Romeoville 0

ROMEOVILLE, IL - The No. 8 Tigers headed into Thursday’s matchup with Romeoville looking for the three game sweep of the Spartans, sending one of the top junior arms in the state to the hill in Arizona State commit Brady Corrigan. Romeoville responded with their own junior hurler, Tulane commit Jeff Zack, setting the stage for an anticipated pitchers duel.

In his first start of the year, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Zack set the tone early with a heavy fastball touching 90 mph that was clearly going to be tough for Tiger hitters to elevate. Zack recorded nine of his first fifteen outs via the groundball and finished with four strikeouts.

On the other side, the No. 2 ranked junior in the state had a different approach, eliminating contact all together. Corrigan showcased swing and miss stuff from the get go and finished with a final tally of 11 punch-outs. His curveball was absolutely devastating to both right and left-handed hitters while showing the confidence to drop it in for strikes as well as expanding the zone.

The Tigers were finally able to get to Zack in the fifth when they got him in the stretch after a one out single by Josh Garner. A walk sandwiched between another base hit loaded the bases for Tyler Garrity who lifted a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Garner and putting Plainfield North on the board with a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch quickly gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead and then tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Facing a three run deficit, the Spartans scratched a couple of base hits to lead off their last at bats, but a quick 1-5-3 double play and Corrigan’s 11th strikeout completed the three game sweep of the Spartans.
