PBR Mailbag: What Does Projection Mean?

I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m itching to see some baseball. This time of year can drag on, but thankfully, the 2015 Super 60 isn’t far away. In a little more than two months, Prep Baseball Report staff members and some of the top prospects from the coverage area will descend on Chicago for the showcase that kicks off the spring. When being evaluated what does good projectablity mean?
Projection has more to do with the draft than anything, but when evaluating high school prospects, you’re trying to judge and predict what they’re going to be able to do in the future. For colleges, that’s projecting their ability for when a player is 18-22 years old. For professional organizations, they’re trying to predict what a player will do from ages 26-32, the general peak years for a major league player.
