Porsche Exchange Player of the Week: Ronell Coleman

By Sean Duncan
Executive Director

One thing Simeon opponents have learned over the years: never underestimate the 5-foot-3, 125-pound Ronell Coleman. The switch-hitting infielder provided a snapshot of what he can do to his competition last week, as he helped propel Simeon to its second consecutive Chicago Public League championship.

The ultimate leadoff hitter, Coleman did it all last week in helping the Wolverines to its ninth city championship under coach Leroy Franklin. And the bigger the stage, the better Coleman performed.

In the city semifinals at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday against Lane Tech, Coleman went 4-for-4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, three runs scored, and two RBI to send the Wolverines to the city championship game against Morgan Park. The Vanderbilt recruit then one-upped his performance before a packed house at UIC, leading Simeon to a 20-9 victory over Morgan Park by going 4-for-5 with a home run, triple, three runs scored and two RBI. He led off the game with a triple, which set the stage for an all-around offensive onslaught. (READ GAME STORY)

But Coleman didn’t earn the Porsche Exchange Player of the Week for his two-game performance – although his statistics merited it. In a five-game span, he went 13-for-18 and scored an astounding 14 runs while driving in eight. He also walked five times, stole six bases and hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field in the sixth inning.

Coleman began his week going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a walk against Little Village on Monday. On Tuesday, he went 1-for-2 with two walks and four runs, and went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI against Washington on Wednesday.

For the season, Coleman his hitting .481 with an .592 on-base percentage. He’s scored 32 runs and driven in 18. Coleman, who’s one of the best defensive infielders in the state, has struck out only twice this season.

The Porsche Exchange salutes Coleman for his hard work and success.
