Porsche Exchange Player of the Week: Sullivan's Nick Frerichs

By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director

Sullivan High School senior utility man Nick Frerichs is this week’s Porsche Exchange Player of the Week thanks to setting a new IHSA record for consecutive hits. Frerichs’ record setting performance this week in his last six games seems near impossible. The Kaskaskia JC commit strung together 20 straight hits, not a misprint, and not a 20-game hitting streak, but 20 straight hits in 20 consecutive at bats.

What’s more remarkable according to Sullivan coach Troy Rogers is the way Frerichs put together his consecutive hits, “I’ve never seen someone so locked in. He was using all fields and hitting an assortment of pitches, and everything was hard hit. I don't really remember a cheap hit the whole week. As far as Nick as a person, he is a great kid, a quiet leader, good student, and he attends my church so he has been a great "older brother" to my two boys. He has tons of talent and really goes all out in everything he does. A couple weeks ago he about ran through the left field fence to make a great catch”.

Frerichs started the streak with a 4-for-4 day against Meridian, with two doubles and three RBI. He continued it going 3-for-3 against Effingham St. Anthony with a double and an RBI; against Decatur St. Teresa he went 5-for-5 with a grand slam, a triple, and seven RBI; against Shelbyville: three doubles and three RBI; against Okaw Valley: 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. The streak finally ended in his third at bat against Clinton yesterday. Frerichs singled and tripled in his first two at bats, before striking out in his third at bat to put an end to a streak not likely to be matched.

Frerichs’ streak wasn’t a series of seeing-eye singles, as ten of his twenty hits were for extra bases. During the streak he also played five different positions: RF, LF, 3B, SS, and earned a win on the mound against Shelbyville. Going into last night’s game he was hitting .549 on the year with seven home runs and 52 RBI.

Sullivan’s senior leader shatters the previous IHSA record of 13 consecutive hits, shared by Champaign Central’s Doug Kyrouac (2010) and Athens’ Kellan Mick (2013).

For his efforts, Frerichs has been named the Porsche Exchange Player of the Week for the week of April 27-May 4.

The Porsche Exchange salutes Frerichs’ hard work and success.
