Porsche Exchange Player of the Week: Will Cornwell

At 5-foot-9, 150 pounds, Will Cornwell isn’t the most physically imposing presence at the plate. Nevertheless, the Glenbard South left-handed hitting junior catcher has made his presence known in a big way this season.

Unknown heading into this spring, Cornwell has raised his profile thanks to his red-hot bat. Cornwell earned the Porsche Exchange Player of the Week honors after a sizzling five-game stretch last week in which he went 12-for-14 with 14 RBI, seven runs and three stolen bases.

His .857 batting average last week included five doubles and a three-run home run. He also walked twice for Glenbard South, which went 4-1 during Cornwell’s streak.

When you make only two outs in a week, every game is a highlight. But none more so than Cornwell’s performance against Lisle last Monday, when he went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a three-run homer and eight RBI.

“He’s not a big kid, but the ball is just jumping off his bat,” said Glenbard South coach Mike Riley. “Everything he has hit has been hard. There are no cheap ones in there. He’s hit in every game.”

For the season, Cornwell is hitting .750 with a .792 on-base percentage and a 1.200 slugging percentage. He has 15 hits, six doubles, nine runs, and 14 RBI through seven games.

“Last summer he was getting everything out in front,” Riley said. “We spent a lot of time letting the ball get deeper. … He’s just a solid all-around player. And he can play multiple positions.”

The Porsche Exchange salutes Cornwell for his hard work and success.
