Q and A with 2017 Wake Forest Commit: Bobby Seymour (Mount Carmel)

By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director

Bobby SeymourMount Carmel outfielder Bobby Seymour has yet to play a game for the Caravan due to sitting out his freshman season after transferring, but the talented left-handed hitting outfielder/first baseman recently committed to play college baseball in the ACC at Wake Forest University.  He is currently ranked No. 4 in Illinois’ 2017 class, No. 20 overall in PBR’s coverage area.  Seymour is the second 2017 prospect in Illinois to commit, following Brother Rice’s Ryan Kutt, who recently committed to Illinois.  He impressed at the Prep Baseball Report Future Games sponsored by Under Armour at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.  Seymour joins a talented Caravan program, loaded with underclass prospects and Division-1 talent such as Josh Stowers, Scott Kapers, Ako Thomas, Malik Carpenter, Jeremy Houston, A.J. Lewis, Cam Hupe, and Zion Pettigrew.

Prospect Q and A

What were your expectations about the recruiting process?  Was it easy or difficult?

My expectation of the recruiting process would be that it would take longer into my junior year.  Wake Forest is a great fit.  So my family and I decided to verbally commit now.

Where did the college you chose first see you?  How did your relationship develop with them?

They saw me in Florida fall ball in Fort Myers and I went to camp at Wake Forest.  They also saw me at the PBR showcase at the MAC in either December or January of last year.  Then at the PBR Futures Game this summer in Indy.

Who is the best player you have faced in your state and why?

Brenden Heiss from Jacobs HS.  He has great velocity and movement.

At what point in your career did you realize you were an elite player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Probably getting to play up at the 16-U level that year and being able to handle the competition.

What were you looking for out of a college to continue your baseball career?

I was looking for a solid coaching staff to help me improve my game and a good education.

What is your best attribute as a baseball player and how does that transfer onto the field for your team?

My work ethic.  It transfers to the field in having to work on and execute the weaker parts of my game so that I can continue to get better.

What part of your game needs the biggest improvement and why?

My defense and I will work on that by taking a lot of reps of ground balls and fly balls.  Also, working on situational plays.

What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

I would say keep working on all aspects of your game at least a couple times a week.

What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?

I play basketball and work with a trainer on conditioning.

What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Having a solid game on Jet Blue Field (spring training home to the Boston Red Sox) in fall ball last season.

What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?

The head coach and his coaching staff, the education, the field, campus, and the weather.

What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Purdue University, Indiana University, and Clemson University.

Preview your high school season for us.  How do you feel you team will be?  What are you expectations and goals?

My high school team will be a powerful lineup from top to bottom, and good defensively. We hope to win the Chicago Catholic League, and a State Championship.

Where do you play baseball in the summer?

I play for Top Tier.  Playing in the wooden bat classic in East Cobb Georgia last year has been one of my favorite experiences.
