Simeon Outlasts Whitney Young

The Simeon Wolverines imposed their will against the Whitney Young Dolphins on Wednesday afternoon, earning a 15-10 victory in the two teams’ second meeting of the year.

Chicago State commit Jamary McKinney got the nod for the visiting Wolverines (15-3). He would toss 3.2 innings before giving way to Tavaris Terrell in the fourth. McKinney struck out three, while surrendering four earned runs on the afternoon. McKinney also delivered a two-run double to right-field in the second inning.

Offensively, Dion Earls Jr. set the pace for the Wolverines. Earls Jr. found his way on base four times, stole four bases, and scored four times. Earls, a dynamic athlete who’s committed to Ferris State to play football, twice stole third base and scored on a forced error on the play.

It looked like Simeon was going to put the game away early, as it sent eight hitters to the plate in each of the first two innings and mounted a 9-1 advantage after three innings.

The Dolphins (11-9) closed the gap with three runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a series of line drives from Benjamin Barclay, Brandon Sanchez and Roberto Vargas. Sanchez, a junior right fielder, was 2-for-4 in the contest with an RBI single in addition to his two-strike, opposite-field double in the fifth.

The final two frames of the game would render a bit of drama, as Whitney Young used four Simeon errors to cut the lead to three. Things could’ve gotten a little more interesting if not for left fielder Reginald Brock’s smooth running catch on a sinking line drive with the bases loaded, ending the Dolphin threat.

Simeon put the game out of reach in their half of the seventh, adding four runs of their own, spurned by a bases-clearing double by Brock.  Lead-off man Raphe Gross scored three runs for Simeon, and added a run-scoring triple.
