Simoneit brothers power Glenbard West

HINSDALE – The Simoneit brothers generated dinner-table conversation for years to come on Monday when the Glenbard West siblings each tagged Hinsdale Central pitchers for home runs in leading the Hilltoppers to a 9-6 West Suburban Silver Conference victory on the road.

Will Simoneit, the not-so-little sophomore brother, gave Glenbard West (4-5, 2-5) a quick 2-0 lead when he blasted a two-run homer to left field in the first inning. Will Simoneit, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound catcher, is an impressive physical specimen. He hits cleanup for the Hilltoppers, and was summarily walked his next three plate appearances after his first inning home run.

Glenbard West was seemingly cruising to victory, leading 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before Hinsdale Central (4-3, 3-2) erupted for five runs, punctuated by junior shortstop Ryan Haff’s grand slam to left field to tie the game at 6-6.

The momentum swing, however, was short-lived, thanks to Daniel Simoneit. The senior brother came off the bench to pinch hit to lead off the sixth inning, and proceeded to launch a home run to dead center. The solo blast sparked a three-run inning and ultimately propelled Glenbard West to victory.

“It’s fantastic, I can’t even put it into words,” said Will Simoneit. “I’m so happy. And with my brother hitting a home run, that doesn’t happen every day.”

Senior third baseman Mitch Monocchio went 3-for-4 with three RBI, which included a run-scoring double in the second and a two-run single in the third for Glenbard West. Junior centerfielder Luke Domask added three hits and two runs scored for the junior-dominated Hilltoppers.

Hinsdale Central was paced by sophomore centerfielder Chris Botsoe, a Louisville recruit who went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and two walks. Botsoe also played a stellar defensive centerfield. Senior first baseman Bobby Skogsbergh went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Red Devils.

Hinsdale Central is off to a slow start despite having three Division I pitchers on its roster: Skogsbergh (Boston College), Adam Dressler (Purdue) and Christian Bokich (Miami Ohio). Bokich started Monday’s game, and worked 2.1 innings, allowing six runs, three earned, with four strikeouts and four walks behind a 79-82 mph fastball.
