St. Laurence Takes Home Class 4A Third Place

JOLIET, IL – St. Laurence captured the Class 4A third place trophy with an 11-6 win over New Trier. This marks the first state trophy for the Vikings of St. Laurence since 1993 when they finished third.  

St. Laurence scored two runs in the second and four in the third to open up an early 6-0 lead on the Trevians. Johnny Peterson got things going in the first inning with a one-out double. Talented sophomore, Matt McCormick, a West Virginia commit, followed up with an opposite-field homerun to make the score 2-0.

In the four-run bottom of the second inning, Illinois commit, Jimmy Burnette, doubled and scored as did Gage Olszak.  

New Trier did all of their damage in the top of the fourth inning, scoring six runs to tie the game at 6-6. In the frame, Dylan Horvitz and Cam Redding singled. Eric Nicholas added a two-out single which scored two runs.

St. Laurence came back and scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth to open up an 11-6 lead.

Olszak threw 2.1 scoreless innings for St. Laurence out of the bullpen. In his two-plus innings of work the right-hander scattered two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out two.

Spencer Beacom threw one inning of scoreless baseball for New Trier, striking out two and allowing one hit.

Peterson went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs to lead the way for the Vikings offense. Burnette and Brian Lyle chipped in with two hits apiece.

Redding finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI for New Trier.
