Top Prospect Showcase Analysis: Pitchers



Today, we take a complete look at the loaded Top Prospect Showcase at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.  Marian Catholic RHP, Regynold Johnson, saw his stock sky rocket at the event with his 87-89 mph fastball coupled with a 75-77 slider.  Patrick Martin also blew up at the event,  a projectable lefty with a 83-85 mph fastball coupled with a 69-72 mph curveball and a changeup with late sink.

A sleeper at the event and a name to put on your radar is Ty Henderson, Webber Township HS, a raw 6-foot-6 righty that topped out 88 mph.

Regynold Johnson, RHP/C, Marian Catholic, Class of 2013
Johnson is a 6-foot-1, 155-pound multi-positional talent who impressed in all facets of the game.  On the mound, Johnson featured a heavy fastball that topped at an event best 89 mph, sitting in the 86-88 mph range.  His slider was firm with late bite that sat at 75-77 mph and his changeup was thrown with solid arm speed and depth at 78-83 mph.  Offensively, Johnson showed a line drive swing with power potential.  Behind the dish, Johnson exhibited quick footwork and an accurate arm (78 mph) with a best pop time of 2.08.

Patrick Martin, LHP, St. Viator, Class of 2013
Martin is a long and projectable 6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed pitcher who showcased command of three pitches.  Operating from a lower ¾ arm slot, Martin is loose and has deception on the backside, as he fired 83-85 mph fastballs with arm-side run.  Martin continued to impress with his off-speed pitches, including a 69-72 mph curveball that showed tight spin and good two-plane action, and a 76-78 mph changeup with late sink. With his body type and arm action, Martin has become one of the more coveted left-handers in the Class of 2013.

Robert Kametas, RHP, Oak Lawn, Class of 2013
Kametas is a 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed pitcher who showcased a consistent 85-87 mph fastball that topped at 88 mph.  He impressed with his off-speed pitches, including a sharp-breaking curveball with two-plane break that sat at 73-75 mph.  Additionally, Kametas threw a 75-76 mph changeup with late sink and run.

Ty Henderson, RHP/OF, Webber Township, Class of 2013
Henderson is a projectable 6-foot-6, 168-pound right-handed pitcher who has the frame and arm to throw significantly harder in the future.  Henderson, who attends a small school in Southern Illinois, works from an over-the-top arm angle. His fastball topped at 88 mph, sitting in the 85-86 range. Henderson also threw a curveball that sat at 64 mph and a changeup that sat at 69-73 mph.  Defensively, Henderson moved well in the outfield, using his frame to get on top of his throws that showed carry to the plate (86 mph).  Offensively, Henderson is a left-handed hitter who ran a 7.27 60.

Andrew Frankenreider, RHP, Dunlap, Class of 2013
Frankenreider is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed pitcher who operates from a ¾ arm slot.  He impressed with an easy 85-88 mph fastball with late arm side life.  Frankenreider continued to impress with his secondary pitches: His 75 mph curveball showed sharp two-plane break, late and down in the zone. It has the potential to be a swing and miss pitch at the next level. He also showcased a 73-75 mph changeup with late fade.

Michael Bainbridge, RHP/3B, Marian Catholic HS, Class of 2014
Bainbridge is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound multi-positional player who impressed at the plate with his easy left-handed swing.  Bainbridge showed a good approach at the plate, keeping his weight behind the ball and maintaining solid balance throughout contact.  Defensively, Bainbridge moved well laterally and showed an accurate arm that was clocked at 79 mph from across the diamond.  He also ran 7.07 60.  On the mound, Bainbridge features three pitches; an 80-83 mph fastball, a 67-71 mph curveball, and a 72-75 mph changeup.

Dan Bedore, LHP, Lake Forest HS, Class of 2013
Bedore is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed pitcher who operates from a high 3/4 arm slot with smooth mechanics.  Bedore showed a 79-81 mph fastball that showed some late action to it.  His off-speed pitches include a 60-63 mph curveball with an 11/5 shape, and a 69 mph changeup that flashed sink.

Paul Boidanis, RHP, Glenbrook North HS, Class of 2013
Boidanis is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound big bodied right-handed pitcher who operates from an over the top arm slot.  Boidanis consistently threw a 83-86 mph fastball for strikes.  He also featured a 12/6 curveball with some bite and depth in the 69-71 mph range.  Additionally, Boidanis throws a 75-78 mph changeup that displayed some fade.

Henry Cappel, RHP, Oak Park-River Forest, Class of 2013
Cappel is a 6-foot-3, 170-pound right-handed pitcher who exhibited a fastball that topped at 83 mph.  He also featured a curveball that sat at 64-67 mph and a splitter with solid depth that sat at 70-71 mph. Cappel has long arms and legs, and a projectable frame, one that should fill out nicely in the coming years.

Carson Cheesman, LHP, Galesburg HS, Class of 2013
Cheesman is a lanky 6-foot, 170-pound two-way player who showed best on the bump, displaying a 78 mph fastball with arm-side life.  Cheesman also threw a 71-72 mph breaking ball that had slurve-like action.  Additionally, Cheesman displayed a 63-66 mph changeup that he located well down in the zone.

Cal Coughlin, 3B/RHP, Loyola, Class of 2016
Coughlin is an extremely projectable 5-foot-10, 160-pound multi-positional talent who will be entering high school this fall.  Coughlin continues to impress with his all-around skills that are playable at any varsity level.  Defensively, Coughlin showcased soft hands at third base, playing through the ball well. His feet work extremely well laterally, and his throws were clocked at 78 mph across the diamond.  Coughlin was equally impressive on the mound, working from a high ¾ arm slot and throwing all four of his pitches with confidence.  His fastball, which sat at 83-85 mph range, displayed late sink and commanded it down in the zone.  His 62-64 mph curveball had sharp, late movement, while his 73 mph changeup demonstrated fade.  His fourth pitch is a cutter that sat at 71-72 mph.  At the plate, Coughlin is an advanced switch-hitter who can swing the bat with authority from both sides of the plate.  He has a short, compact swing and power potential from both sides.  Overall, Coughlin looks to be the premier prospect in the Class of 2016.

Jake Cousins, RHP, Wheaton Academy, Class of 2013
Cousins is a projectable 6-foot-4, 170-pound right-handed pitcher who showed life on his fastball down in the zone that topped at 86 mph.  Cousins’ quick arm and projectable frame gives him a chance to throw harder in the coming years.  Cousins also threw two off-speed pitches: a 66-67 mph curveball with 11/5 shape, and a 77 mph changeup.

Elbert Dunnigan, C/RHP/INF, Simeon, Class of 2013
Dunnigan is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound multi-positional athlete who showcased his versatility at the event.  On the mound, Dunnigan impressed with his 85-87 mph fastball.  Dunnigan also threw a firmer 65-67 mph knuckleball that he threw with confidence, and a 69 mph curveball. Behind the dish, Dunnigan showcased a strong and accurate arm (79 mph) from the crouch, with a best pop time of 2.00. 

Charkael Eggleston, LHP, Morgan Park, Class of 2013
Eggleston is an athletically built 6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed pitcher with a projectable frame who operates from over the top arm slot.  Eggleston threw a 75-77 mph fastball, a 59-60 mph curveball, and 67-68 mph changeup.

Tyler Feece, LHP, Vernon Hills HS, Class of 2013
Feece is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed pitcher who throws from a high ¾ slot and commands three pitches for strikes.  He showcased a fastball that topped at 84 mph and sat in the 82-83 mph range.  He throws his offspeed pitches with confidence. His 65-68 mph curveball was tight and sharp, while his 73-76 mph changeup demonstrated sink down in the zone.

Sam Geraci, RHP/SS, Illinois Christian, Class of 2014
Geraci is a 5-foot-11, 160-pound two-way player who showcased soft hands and a solid arm across the infield (79 mph).  Offensively, Geraci has an athletic setup, exhibiting a smooth load and economical approach to the baseball.  On the mound, Geraci throws from a high 3/4 slot and showed a 78-81 mph fastball.  He also throws a 68-69 mph curveball that had an 11/5 shape.  His third pitch was a 67-70 mph changeup.

Jake Hart, OF/LHP, Shepard HS, Class of 2014
Hart is a 5-foot-7, 175-pound multi-positional player who showcased a level, line drive swing while maintaining solid balance throughout contact. Hart has a slightly open stance and takes a short stride to the baseball.  On the mound, Hart exhibited a fastball that topped at 73 mph and a curveball that sat at 64-66 mph.  Additionally, he threw a changeup for strikes that sat at 62-64 mph.

Baylor Holmes, LHP/1B, Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Class of 2014
Holmes is a physically advanced 6-foot-2, 215-pound multi-positional player who has intriguing upside on the mound. The left-hander showed feel for three pitches. His fastball topped at 81 mph, while his curveball sat at 63-65 mph.  Additionally, he threw a changeup that sat at 70 mph. With a few mechanical adjustments, Holmes should see his velocity spike in the coming years. Offensively, he showcased a level, line drive swing.  Holmes barreled up balls to all fields, showing some power potential.

Fred Manke, RHP/OF, Lodi (WI), Class of 2014
Manke is a 6-foot, 180-pound two-way player who impressed on the mound with his easy delivery. Manke’s arm works with little effort, as he showed command of an 83-84 mph fastball, a 66-68 mph curveball with solid bite and depth, and a 73-78 mph changeup, which has a chance to be a legit out pitch showing solid two plane action.  Defensively, Manke moved well in the outfield and got momentum behind his accurate throws (85 mph).  Additionally, Manke ran a 7.19 60.

Bradley Margolin, C/RHP, Glenbrook North HS, Class of 2013
Margolin is a 5-9, 175-pound multi-positional player who showcased his versatility at the event with quick feet and a strong arm.  Margolin ran one of the fastest 60 times of the event, running a 6.78 60. Margolin is an advanced receiver behind the dish, exhibiting the ability to keep the baseball in front of him with consistency.  He had a best pop time of 2.05 and was clocked at 78 mph from the crouch.  From the outfield, Margolin displayed a strong, accurate arm (86 mph).  On the bump, Margolin showcased an 83-85 mph fastball that showed arm side run.  His best pitch was his 78 mph slider that flashed tight spin and a sharp, late break.  He also threw a changeup in the 69-71 mph range with sink. 

David Meade, RHP, Antioch HS, Class of 2013
Meade is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher who demonstrated sound mechanics.  From an over the top arm slot, he showed command for his 82-84 mph fastball.  Meade also throws a 71-73 mph curveball that has 12/6 shape with solid depth.  Additionally, Meade throws a 75-76 mph changeup with good arm speed and movement down in the zone.

Matt Mikolajczak, LHP, Lincoln Way Central HS, Class of 2013
Mikolajczak is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-handed pitcher who displayed good rhythm in his bullpen session.  Working from a high 3/4 arm slot, Mikolajczak features a 79-82 mph fastball with some arm side movement. He also showed command of a 63-65 mph curveball, which he located down in the zone, in addition to a 72-73 mph changeup.

Brendan Miller, RHP, Plainfield North HS, Class of 2013
Miller is an athletic and projectable 6-foot-4, 180-pound right handed pitcher who operates from a high 3/4 arm slot and showed a loose, quick arm.  Miller showcased a fastball with arm side run that was in the 82-83 mph range.  He also featured a changeup sitting at 75-76 with sink and life down in the zone, and a 71-72 mph slider. Miller has long arms and legs, and as he continues to grow into his frame, look for him to see a velocity spike in the coming years.

Miller is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound athletic right-handed pitcher who showed command of all three of his pitches.  Miller works from a high 3/4 angle with an 85 mph fastball that exhibited arm side run.  His off speed pitches are his strength, with his curveball sitting at 72-76 mph showing late two-plane life and a 76-78 mph changeup with plus sink down in the zone.

Chris Pedrak, RHP/1B, Downers Grove South, Class of 2014
Pedrak is a 6-foot, 188-pound multi-positional player who showcased a level, balanced swing through the zone resulting in consistent line drives.  On the mound, Pedrak showed a fastball that was in the 73-76 mph range with some movement to it.  His off-speed pitches consist of a 62-65 mph curveball and a 59 mph changeup.

Thomas Prescott, LHP/1B, Lyons Township HS, Class of 2013
Prescott is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound multi-positional talent. The left-hander works from a high 3/4 arm slot, and has deception in delivery. His fastball sat in the 81-83 mph range, while curveball registered at 61-64 and changeup at 70-73.   Positionally, he showed smooth defensive skills at first base with a quick exchange and accurate arm (77 mph).  At the plate, Prescott hit from a balanced setup with a solid lower half. He stays flat through the zone, enabling him to spray line drives to all fields.

Kyle Pullia, RHP, Fenwick, Class of 2013
Pullia is a big 6-foot-5, 230-pound right-handed pitcher who operates from an over the top arm angle.  Pullia showcased a 83-85 mph fastball that topped out at 86 mph with some sink.  Pullia also featured a curveball that varied between 58-65 mph, and a changeup that sat at 65-68 mph.

Ricardo Ramirez, 3B/RHP, De LaSalle, Class of 2013
Ramirez is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound multi-positional athlete who looks to be one of the premier third basemen in the Class of 2013.  Ramirez showed advanced skills in all facets of the game.  Defensively, Ramirez exhibited soft hands while working through the ball with ease and displayed an accurate arm across the diamond with carry (84 mph).  Ramirez showed smooth footwork while taking excellent angles to the baseball.  Offensively, Ramirez possesses an explosive right-handed swing with a quiet front side as he stays balanced through the ball.  Ramirez had arguably the best round of bp of the loaded event, consistently squaring up the baseball with backspin carry. On the mound, Ramirez throws over the top with solid rhythm and easy effort.  He throws a heavy fastball that topped at 85 mph and a changeup with late sink and solid feel that sat at 74-75 mph.  Shortly after the event, Ramirez verbally committed to UIC.

Andrew Reisinger, RHP, McHenry West HS, Class of 2013
Reisinger is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed pitcher who showcased a hard 83-85 mph fastball with sink.  Reisinger featured a changeup with fade that sat at 72-75 mph.  Additionally, he threw a curveball with 11/5 movement that sat at 69-70 mph.

Connor Riley, RHP, Marmion, Class of 2013
Riley is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed pitcher who threw from a high ¾ arm slot with solid rhythm and command.  Riley showed solid feel with his 82-84 mph fastball.  His off-speed pitches feature a 72-74 mph curveball that had late two-plane life with bite and a 75-76 mph changeup that flashed sink.

Seth Rosenberg, C/RHP, Niles West HS, Class of 2013
Rosenberg is a 6-foot, 200-pound multi-positional athlete who impressed on his mound with a 86-87 mph fastball.  Rosenberg also threw his curveball in the 69-72 mph range and a 79-80 mph changeup.  Behind the plate, Rosenberg had a best pop time of 2.05 and was clocked at 76 mph from the crouch.  Offensively, Rosenberg is a left-handed hitter who showed solid bat speed and pull side power potential.

Even Sandmann, SS/C/RHP, Lincoln Way East HS, Class of 2014
Sandmann is a 6-foot, 160-pound multi-positional player who showed well in all facets of the game.  Sandmann can do it all, exhibiting good footwork and solid angles in the outfield with accurate throws that were clocked at 84 mph.  At shortstop, he showcased solid hands and good lateral movement with a quick transfer.  Behind the plate, Sandmann had solid feet and a quick release with a best pop time of 2.01 and was clocked at 75 mph from the crouch.  At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance and has a smooth swing that generates good pop.  On the mound, Sandmann showed a fastball that topped at 83 mph and a curveball that sat in the 65-69 mph range.  His third pitch was a 65-67 mph changeup.  Additionally, Sandmann ran a 7.29 60.

Jake Schnierow, RHP, Stevenson HS, Class of 2013
Schnierow is a 6-foot, 165-pound right-handed pitcher who showed command and feel for all three of his pitches.  From a ¾ arm angle and easy effort, Schnierow sat at 79-82 with his fastball that showed late run and sink.  His slider had a sweeping 10/4 movement that sat in the 73-74 mph range.  He also threw a changeup with solid arm speed and downward movement.

Alex Ventrella, LHP, Lisle HS, Class of 2013
Ventrella is a 6-foot, 180-pound left-handed pitcher who works from the stretch.  Ventrella throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and features a 78-80 mph fastball showing solid feel for the pitch.  Ventrella’s off-speed pitches consist of a 63-64 mph curveball and a 70 mph changeup that flashed occasional sink.

Michael Woods, RHP, Elk Grove, Class of 2013
Woods is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with a quick arm and little effort on the mound.  Woods displayed a fastball with sink, keeping it down in the zone.  His fastball topped at 86 mph, while consistently sitting in the mid 80s. Woods also featured a 12/6 curveball with deception that sat at 65-67 mph.  Additionally, he threw a changeup that sat at 70 mph. With his frame and body type, look for Woods to continue to add velocity in the coming years.

Nik Zak, OF/RHP, Elk Grove, Class of 2013
Zak is a 5-foot-11, 160-pound two-way talent who impressed defensively with his arm strength, throwing 90 mph from the outfield with throws that were right on the money.  The ball seemed to jump out of his hand with ease, showing solid carry and life.  Zak took good routes to the baseball and used his momentum well to play through the ball.  Additionally, Zak ran a 7.40 60.  On the mound, Zak’s fastball touched 83 mph and sat in the 79-81 mph range.  His secondary pitches included a 62-64 mph curveball and a 72-73 mph changeup.
