Underclass Invitational: Middle Infield Analysis

By Steve Nielsen and Sean Duncan

As we continue our coverage of the Underclass Invitational on Jan. 20, we take a deeper look into the middle infielders. The 2016 class stole the show for middle infielders, as Tyler Fitzgerald (Rochester HS, 2016) and Matt Burch (Warren HS, 2016) very well could be the two of the top prospects at the entire event. Fitzgerald is an extremely projectable and athletic shortstop who could project as one of the top prospects nationally. Burch, a left-handed hitting shortstop, will also be a high level prospect as he showed advanced defensive actions and an excellent feel for the game.

The top Class of 2015 middle infielders showed well, too, as Reid Birlingmair (Normal West HS, 2015) proved that he will be a legitimate offensive threat. General McArthur (Crete-Monee HS, 2015) also impressed as he showed improved arm strength and foot speed since the last time we saw him in the fall.

Here’s how the rest of the classes shook out.
