Underclass Invitational: RHP Analysis

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

The winter Underclass Invitational is one of our favorite events because it always brings the most unseen talent to the forefront. This year was no different as several prospects put their names on our big board. Today we continue our roll-out from the event looking at the top right-handed pitchers in the 2018 and 2019 class.

2018 RHP Jacob Maton (Chatham-Glenwood HS) stole the show on the mound. The right-hander flashed an advanced three-pitch mix and sat 87-89 mph with his fastball. Maton also featured a cutter at 79-82 mph with late hard break and plus feel.

2019 RHP Grant Leader (Lyons Township HS) was the top 2019 arm in attendance. His velocity continues to rise, his first three fastballs were 86 mph, and he eventually touched 87 before his bullpen was over.

Here are the Top 2018 and 2019 right-handed pitchers from the event.

TOP PROSPECTS

2018 RHP's

1. Jacob Maton, RHP/INF, Glenwood HS, 2018
Looks to be one of the top prospects in Illinois’ 2018 class, and has the potential to be an elite national prospect. Highly athletic, angular 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame; wider shoulders, long limbs with plenty of room for continued physical development. Earned top pitching prospect honors at the Illinois Underclass Invitational in January. Displayed advanced three-pitch mix, headlined by an easy 87-89 mph fastball with late arm-side life. Works from high-3/4 slot, short, quick arm action; simple, clean mechanics with athletic in-line delivery. Maintains balance and rhythm throughout delivery. Pounded the lower-quadrant of the strike zone with his fastball; clearly more in the tank as he physically develops. Also showed advanced cutter in the 79-82 range with sharp late action; cutter showed potential of being a high-level pitch. Changeup is also a quality offering. Throws 78-82 mph changeup with aggressiveness, occasional sink down in the zone. Overall impressive bullpen performance, though it seems Maton has only begun to scratch the surface of his potential. … While no doubt Maton’s future will be on the mound, he also showcased well at the plate. Has a balanced, simple plate approach, highly athletic hands and generates easy bat speed. Maintains excellent balance throughout contact with an aggressive lower half. Ball jumped off his bat with backspin carry. … Comes from a strong baseball family: both his older brothers – RHP Phil Maton and SS/RHP Nick Maton – were drafted in 2015. Phil was drafted out of Louisiana-Lafayette (20th round); Nick drafted out of high school (40th round).

2. Jake Rosing, RHP, Richmond Burton, 2018
Athletic build 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed pitcher and Louisville commit. Quick and athletic arm action from a high ¾ slot. Repeats his delivery well, smooth rhythm, easy effort and an athletic finish. Fastball had easy life and was harder out of the stretch. Eased into his bullpen with his first three fastball coming in at 81, 83 and 85 mph. From there on out Rosing sat 86-88 mph, touching 89 twice. Curveball worked mostly 12/6, some sharpness but a tendency to get underneath it as well at 65-68 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes, with arm speed, showed fade and arm-side-run and clocked at 70-72 mph. One of the top arms in the 2018 class.

3. Scott Youngbrandt, OF/INF/RHP, Andrew, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound two-way player, strong, developed build. Shows big arm strength all over the field for his age, 88 mph from the outfield, 84 mph across the diamond, over the top slot, shows accuracy, works well from the outfield with carry. Athletic defender, natural actions both on the infield and in the outfield, attacks the baseball in the outfield, plays through aggressively. Right-handed hitter, balanced setup, short stride. Fairly level path, ability to create backspin and found the barrel in BP. Fastball showed some life and sat 82-85 mph.  Curveball worked 11/5 with short break and sat at 78 mph. Changeup was thrown hard and ranged between 81-82 mph.
