Unsigned Senior Games: Pitching Analysis

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Illinois/Wisconsin

Pitching is always in high demand and there was plenty to go around at the Unsigned Senior Games. RHP Connor Hock, out of Bay Port, WI took the top overall spot showing a command-able 83-86 mph. His 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame and loose arm action screams more velocity in the tank. Closely behind was LHP Josh Mutter (Lincoln-Way North) who also just too the top spot in the outfield group. Mutter may have a higher ceiling on the mound as he showed a real knack for the mound and obvious athleticism. His pitchabiity might have been the best at the event and showcased a fastball that touched 82 mph.

Here’s a look at the top pitching prospects from the Unsigned Senior Games.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Connor Hock, RHP, Bay Port (WI), 2015
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher currently ranked No. 28 in Wisconsin’s 2015 class impressed with projectable, lanky, and athletic frame.  Works from a tall and fall delivery, short, loose, high ¾ arm slot, regular effort, smooth rhythm, level shoulders throughout delivery, lands slightly closed.  Fastball sat 83-86 mph with running action for strikes.  Showed solid feel for 71-73 mph breaking ball with 11/5 shape and short, late biting action.  Also flashed a 79 mph changeup with solid arm speed.  Hock was one of the top arms available at the Unsigned Senior Games, and has the frame to add more velocity in the upcoming years.

2. Josh Mutter, LHP/OF, Lincoln-Way North, 2015
6-foot-3, extremely lanky 155-pound left-handed hitting outfielder/left-handed pitcher impressed as one of the top two-way talents at this year’s Unsigned Senior Games.  Hits from an open stance, hand load back smoothly, long stride, dives at times, short, level bat path with fluid rhythm and 82 mph exit velocity off the tee.  Went 2-for-5 with two singles during game action.  Defensively, fields position well, fluid footwork, clean exchanges, plays through the ball athletically.  Threw 87 mph from the outfield from long, loose, high ¾ arm slot with plus carry.  Athleticism and crow hop ability bodes well for future velocity gains on the mound, where he really impressed striking out five in two perfect, scoreless innings.  Ran a 7.23 60 and 4.50 from home to first.  Tall and fall delivery, same loose arm action as in the outfield, smooth rhythm, level shoulders, lower half stride direction stays in line with home plate, lands square.  Fastball sat 79-81, touching 82 mph with sink.  Gets on hitters quickly thanks to effortless delivery and arm action.  Threw sweeping slider for strikes at 66-69 mph, buried it down in the zone with two strikes getting three swinging strikeouts.  Changeup was also thrown for strikes at 68-72 mph with sink.  Mutter has a plus feel for pitching and the projectable frame to envision upper 80’s velocity in his future once he adds weight.

Fastball topped at 87 mph, pitched consistently at 84-85 mph, occasional run, showed control in the zone. Curveball plays on 11.5 plane, 68-71 mph, most used secondary pitch in game action. 8. Brian Pall, RHP, Evergreen Park, 2015
