Unsigned Senior Spotlight: 3B Austin Kline

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Illinois/Wisconsin

Today’s Unsigned Senior Spotlight features Montini Catholic third baseman Austin Kline. Kline was recently in attendance at the fall Unsigned Senior Showcase on October 20 where he showcased a well-rounded skill set.

Austin KlineKline is strong bodied 5-foot-11, 190-pound switching hitting third baseman. He brings an overall athleticism that could bode well for multiple positions. Kline ran a 7.19 in the 60 while displaying a 75 mph arm across the diamond. His short over the top arm slot flashed carry and accuracy. Offensively he hits from an athletic setup from both sides showing solid bat speed, he posted exit velocities of 83 mph from the tee.

Kline has already been receiving interest from a number of schools.

"So far, I have had Indiana/Purdue-Ft. Wayne (IPFW) ask me to their camp this past July. Also, Georgetown University asked me to visit their campus on Junior Day. The schools that seem to have the most interest are: Lawrence University, Georgetown University, Missouri S&T, Bethany Lutheran, North Central College, Lewis University, Beloit College and St. Francis."

So far Kline said he has made unofficial visits to Georgetown University back in January and Lawrence University roughly two weeks ago. Kline also said he is scheduling visits to the rest of the schools mentioned next month.

"I am looking for a competitive baseball program and also for a school that offers a strong Business degree. Eventually, I would like to pursue a Law degree."

Kline is keeping his academics in line, according to Kline he is carrying a 3.81 GPA and is a National Honor Society member.

Location is not much of a factor for Kline.

"I really like the East coast; but wherever I end up I will be happy. Again, a competitive baseball program with a strong Business school would be the ideal place."

Last year Montini Catholic won the conference title, the first time since 2007. Kline had a good year for Montini starting at third base all year and hitting .364 while leading the team in RBI with 33. He was also named All-Conference, All-Area Honorable Mention and All-District by Crossroads. He also earned All-Conference Academic for a second year in a row.

Kline will be a big part in the Bronco success in 2014 as he hopes to lead Montini to another conference title.
